One of the features that’s commonly on people’s must-have home wish lists is lots of natural light. And if you look at a Leanne Ford-designed space, you immediately know that she understands the assignment. Unsurprisingly, Ford loves a creamy, warm, white paint on the walls and ceiling, which instantly brightens a room, but there’s another reason her projects feel so sunny: She usually forgoes window treatments

“If you’ve been here for a minute, you’ve probably noticed — I’m not big on window treatments,” Ford wrote in a recent Instagram caption. “Why? I’ll let my go-to design inspiration Elsie De Wolfe take this one, she says: ‘Do not lose sight of the fact that your windows are supposed to give you sunshine and air.’”

Leanne Ford Admits That She’s Usually Anti-Window Treatments

Basically, Ford’s theory is, why block out the light coming through your windows if that’s what they’re there for? And a lot of people in the comments section of her post agree with this keeping windows curtain-free.

“I love this!” one person commented, adding, “I have resisted window treatments in our kitchen and eating area because I cannot abide diminishing the view of the outdoors in the least. It’s wonderful to view nature and wildlife with no obstructions.”

Another person wrote, “SAME. I’m in my 20th year as a designer, but I still balk when someone asks me about blinds and curtains. I simply don’t want to!”

Now just because Ford usually forgoes window treatments, she understands that sometimes there is a need for them, especially when it comes to privacy. In these instances, you might see her use a café curtain, like she did in this bathroom redo, which allows sunlight to still stream in while preserving the privacy of whoever is in the tub.

She also installed sheer curtains in a baby’s nursery to cut back on the brightness — babies and their brand-new skin are sensitive to sunlight!

So there are times where curtains are a must. But for the most part, Ford chooses to do without them altogether. If you’re looking to brighten up your space in a snap, toss your curtains — that might just be the easiest room makeover you’ll ever do!
