A Condo Found on Craigslist Is a Uniquely Magical, Bright Dream Rental
Name: Ella Khan
Location: Clawson neighborhood — Oakland, California
Size: 800 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years, renting
I found my home via Craigslist ad and it was seriously such a magical find. The condo is located in an old elementary school building that was converted into lofts several years ago. Each space is unique and mine had been recently renovated by the previous owner who had put in beautiful pale reclaimed hardwood floors, industrial lighting fixtures, and an amazing marble island. The high ceilings and huge windows definitely sealed the deal!
Prior to moving into this apartment, I had basically just used hand-me-down furniture from various friends and family members. But having my first “grown-up place” and it being such a cool backdrop definitely inspired me to start all over. I essentially got rid of all of my old stuff (besides my knick-knacks from my travels) and with the help of a few (very good and very patient) friends and a lot of hunting, was able to create a space that was filled only with things I absolutely love.
What is your favorite room and why? The living room is definitely my favorite room. The large windows and perfectly placed tree allow for just the right amount of light to flood in throughout the day. This makes it the perfect environment to read, lounge around with my plants, watch TV, take a nap, or entertain guests.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Maximal minimalism.
If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? I would love to have a bigger closet (or have a real closet at all I suppose). My place did not come with a closet and the previous occupant used a large armoire in the bedroom but due to my goal of keeping the space open, I could not find an armoire that worked so I ended up turning the laundry room into a walk in closet. It works but it is definitely a tight squeeze in there when I am actually doing laundry. Especially because when it comes to my clothing, I am not very good at trying to practice minimalism.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The most recent addition to my home is a replica of the Herman Miller “Nelson marshmallow” sofa. This was previously owned by one of my good friends and as she no longer had space for it and knew that I was obsessed, she let me baby sit it here until she develops a need for it again. I still have not found the exact space for it yet but I basically love it everywhere.
Any advice for creating a home you love? My biggest advice would be to only fill your home with objects that bring you joy/serve a purpose. I am by nature a maximalist so having extra clutter comes natural to me but living by this mantra has really helped me create a space that immediately makes people feel relaxed and calm. I also think it is important not to rush into decorating your space. Take the time to find things you really love. So what if you do not have a sofa for three months? Really spending time to get small spaces just right is so worth it and watching it all come together overall is really fun.
Thanks, Ella!
