“Before we moved in, the owner was an 90-year-old French man who lived in a space that was very busy with heavy, old style, French wooden furniture combined with super traditional Moroccan decor items,” begins Mario Rivault, who for five years has owned this large home in Marrakech, Morocco, with his partner, Maxime, and their two (saved from the street) cats, Erri and Billie.

Before they moved in, Mario says all the walls were covered with a brownish pink tadelakt, which he describes as a traditional coating you usually find in old riads. Their home is also located below street level (similar to a basement apartment), which was leading to a dark interior space. Mario and Maxime attempted to bring more natural light inside by adding large windows in the living area.

The couple also started their home decorating journey by painting all the walls white at first to help brighten the space. But eventually they decided to “play with some bright colors, starting with the green zellige fireplace. We now love how the green inside and the Marrakech pink outside!”

Nearly all the items in their home, from the rugs and textiles to the tables (even the couch!) are either handmade by local artisans or vintage. “We love that here in Morocco you can have your furniture actually made by people.”
