Martha Stewart Has a Nontraditional Take for Her Garden this Summer (and It’s Gorgeous!)
Although she’s a pro at pretty much everything that takes place inside the home (cooking, decorating, cleaning, laundry, etc.), Martha Stewart may be the most proud of her work outdoors. Her gardens are packed full of delicious vegetables, colorful flowers, lush greenery, and the layout of each space is meticulously designed by Stewart herself.
In a recent Instagram post, Stewart focused her attention on her potted plants. They may not get as much airtime as her hydrangeas, clematis, and garden veggies, but according to Stewart, they’re just as lovely as those plants growing in the ground.
“I love container plants and whenever I am home I always like to keep a collection of interesting specimens in and around my Winter House where I can see them every day,” she wrote in an Instagram caption. “Most of my potted plants are kept in my main greenhouse, so they can be monitored and maintained properly. Now that it is summertime, I have a beautiful selection of lemon cypress, Eugenia topiaries, and a variety of herbs displayed in the sunken terrace behind my kitchen.”
There are so many reasons why Stewart loves her potted plants just as much as her garden-grown ones. She writes that, when indoors, they “increase creativity, reduce stress, and eliminate air pollutants,” while also enhancing the look of any space they’re placed in.
And, not to mention, depending on the plant in the pot, it can be so much more than a decorative piece. “A display of pretty plants can be simple as well as functional,” she continues. “I have lots of potted herbs, such as oregano.”
Unlike her outdoor plants, these potted greens can last throughout the year when brought inside during the winter. “Place potted plants where they can be protected from strong winds and heavy summer rains,” Stewart recommends. “Potted plants on display outdoors in summer are a good thing.”
If you’re new to gardening or don’t have the space for a full garden, Stewart proves that potted plants can be a beautiful option to add some greenery both indoors and out.
