I admit that I’m fascinated by professional organizer Kristen Ziegler, founder of Minima, and her immaculately organized, clean home. Much to my husband’s annoyance, my own style skews closer to spaces like Emily Powell’s painted home on the minimalist/maximalist spectrum. But even I can admit that living in a space that’s tidy, minimal, and impeccably put-together must feel amazing.

As a professional organizer, Kristen suggests not wasting your time and money on overcomplicated solutions. "People often buy expensive products hoping a 'perfect system' will solve their problems. In reality, the best solution is almost always the simplest. Most clients I work with discover they don’t need more bins — they need less stuff. You simply can’t organize your way out of excess."

Always knowing where everything is, never having to face a pile of clutter, always being guest-ready — it’s certainly not a reality I inhabit daily. But for Kristen and her husband, Jonathan Fischer, two introverts who also work from home, their two-bedroom condo in Richmond, Virginia, is like a “giant exhale.”

Throughout the home, Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace in flat is used on the walls/ceilings, with semi-gloss on the trim. The original white oak and heart pine flooring was refinished with Loba 2K Invisible.

“We have so much breathing room and natural light,” writes Kristen. “We ensure every inch is used intentionally — even our shared home office doubles as home base for two of our bunnies.” The couple shares the home with three Netherland Dwarf rabbits: Nacci, Flicka, and Lola.

Don't try to completely overhaul your entire home all at once. "People often treat decluttering as a singular, massive event, but an initial project can take days or weeks to truly complete. It’s impossible to stay on top of a space if you view it as a one-time task. Decluttering is most successful as a practice — like exercise or healthful eating. For example, my husband and I keep a donation bag in our car. When we find something we don’t need, we add it to the bag; when it’s full, we drop it off. If you maintain the practice, you minimize the project."

The 1516-square-foot condo was built in 1914, and had a very timeless style with historic architectural bones when purchased three years ago. “The space was rich in original details, with 10-foot ceilings, white oak and heart pine floors, antique windows, pocket doors, and brass hardware. It was ready to be polished into the Scandinavian-inspired apartment of my dreams,” Kristen writes.

"Don’t try to solve the puzzle while the pieces are still in the box," Kristen advises. "When you empty the space completely, you can finally see every piece you’re working with. After you sort and decide what stays, organize your most essential items first (like forming the edges of the puzzle). Once that foundation is set, the rest becomes manageable."

Before moving in, Kristen acted as the designer and project manager for the three-month restoration. “We refinished the original flooring, sanded the old millwork smooth, removed the newer crown molding, and replaced the newer baseboards with a historically accurate profile,” she explains.

“We also restored the transoms and the brass hardware, upgraded the HVAC registers and the electrical fixtures, and repainted the entire space,” Kristen continues. “Since then, we’ve completed major remodels on the kitchen (in 2023) and the primary bathroom (in 2025). Only the hall bathroom remains, but for now it serves as bunny Lola’s room.”
