This “Voracious” Reader’s Quirky NYC Apartment Has Multiple Magical Reading Nooks
“It was really important to me that my home felt like a reflection of me. I think social media is great, but I often see different iterations of the same home over and over on there (and lots of white and beige!), and I wanted my space to stand out. Also I’m way too messy for all the white,” writes freelance journalist Amanda Mactas, who enlisted the help of Kim Liptak to help make her one-bedroom, 1000-square-foot apartment in Manhattan’s Sutton Place neighborhood shine.

Amanda says she loved a lot about the apartment right away. “It’s hard to find an apartment in New York City that doesn’t look like a white box these days, and I was looking for something that wasn’t cookie-cutter and hopefully a little quirky,” she writes. Along with wanting to add more style to the space, she also wanted to add in much more storage.
She’s owned the apartment for two years, but admits there were still moving boxes in the apartment when she finally hired Kim Liptak Design. (She referred to the apartment as “simply a place I could get my workouts in” before the renovation.) After the redesign (and with help from the contractor, Nuza Home Improvement), Amanda is thrilled with her home’s look.
“I feel like I have a couple different aesthetics that I really gravitate towards — I really like the feel of an old library, but I also love some elements of more modern style, so I was really impressed at Kim’s ability to kind of fuse my contrasting styles together,” Amanda explains.
“At the end of the day, I love lounging in the living room because Kim was really able to make it feel cozy and fun, without it feeling old or outdated. One of my goals was to utilize each individual space or room of my apartment as it’s meant to be enjoyed, so I wanted my bedroom dark to encourage me not to work in bed! It’s moody and sensual, but not too over the top. Now I call it my boudoir!”
