If you’ve been following Nate Berkus’ design career for a few years now, you’ll have noticed his love of marble — specifically heavily veined Breccia marble in neutral colors. And according to Berkus, who recently took to Instagram to answer a few marble-related questions in a series of slides, marble is always going to be his go-to choice for kitchen countertops and bathrooms because it’ll look good forever.

One of the main issues some people have with marble is that it can be a bit tricky to care for, since it’s softer than granite or quartz. But according to Berkus, that’s also what makes marble so great.

What to Know About Marble Countertops

“I like marble that looks aged and lived in. That’s why I usually use honed or matte stone,” Berkus wrote in one of his Instagram slides. “I don’t baby our marble. I don’t think it needs to be treated like a newborn infant.”

The dings, scratches, water stains, and imperfections only add to the antique and cozy look of marble, which Berkus loves so much. So when he was asked if marble is his number-one choice for kitchen countertops in the sixth slide of the below post, he answered, “Yes. Always yes.”

And marble is one of those materials that is truly timeless, so it’ll never go out of style in any space you put it in. “It references classical architecture,” Berkus continued. “It’s been around since the beginning of time and is arguably one of the most timeless materials out there.”

“Obsessed with marble and love it,” one person wrote in the comments of Berkus’ post, adding, “I could care less if it’s high maintenance. There is something about aged marble, think Italy or Paris in an old house or apartment. So glam.”

Another person added, “All the worn French café counters have so much character.” And someone else wrote, “If marble can survive hundreds of years on steps and buildings in Italy, it can hold up in kitchens. I do always like to warn clients that it will wear and tear and show its age. But in a good way.”

The beauty of natural marble will always overshadow the knicks and spots, and will continue to make your kitchen look and feel so warm and homey for years and years to come — plus it’s Nate Berkus-approved!
