The morning is full of possibilities. Some of those possibilities include snoozing your alarm 10 times in a row, spacing out in front of your coffee maker, and getting back in bed just to lie down for five more minutes (which turns into two hours). You can also get up quickly and be productive, but that’s very much easier said than done. There is one little trick that might make it easier to get up and stay up, though — and all it involves is, well, staying up.

What Is the “No Sitting” Rule?

The “no sitting” rule isn’t new or attributed to one specific person, per se, but it was recently discussed in a popular Instagram Reel by content creator Sophia Lee. In the video she shares how she started using the “no sitting” rule about a year ago, and how this mindset shift has made her “so much more productive in the morning.”

She explains that she was inspired by seeing how much her godmother could get done around the house during the day. Her godmother said she just “doesn’t sit down” and “keep[s] moving on to the next thing,” and Lee honors that by trying not to sit down directly after she wakes up. Instead, she strips her bed, starts a load of laundry, makes tea, chooses an outfit for the day, sorts through dry cleaning, and opens a package without taking a break between each short task.

It’s not meant to be taken completely literally — you do see her sitting down in the video in order to more comfortably organize some clothes on hangers. No sitting essentially means starting your day by immediately doing tasks of some sort (usually easily achievable ones around your home) instead of sitting down to rest, check your phone, or do anything that might shake your momentum.

Why the “No Sitting” Rule Is a Brilliant Productivity Hack

As someone who loves multitasking, gets easily distracted, and is not a morning person, I both love and hate this hack. I love it because I know exactly where its power comes from — once you do one task, it’s easier to take on another because you’re already standing. After a couple of these, you ideally get into a nice flow state of getting a reasonable amount of things done. When it works, it feels smooth, easy, and gratifying. Plus, even though I dislike mornings, it can be pleasant to groggily do small, mindless chores, at least sometimes (you also don’t need to implement this rule every morning!).

The reason I hate this hack is because it’s so, so easy to think you’re better than it. Oh, what’s one minute on the couch, just to sip my drink? Forty-five minutes later you forget why you ever sat down. Humbling!

Of course, everyone’s brain and routine is different, so don’t stress if you try the “no sitting” rule and genuinely don’t find it helpful, or if your body doesn’t allow you to stand or walk around for sustained amounts of time. Some of the people in Lee’s Instagram comments had a different approach to starting their day productively. “I found that time blocking my day made me so much more productive without the pain of being on my feet constantly and burnout,” photographer Melanie Allison commented. “I even pencil in time to sit.”
