Move things around, swap styles, change your mind a million times: Room Plan makes it easy to experiment. Here’s how I used it to find my favorite dining room layout.
First, the Furnishings
I wanted to start with a statement-making dining table: I was drawn to the organic shape and honey wood tone of this one, which takes up space without crowding the room. Since I love the look of mix-and-match dining seating, I added chairs and a bench, both with fresh white upholstery and light-toned wood legs. Everything looked great, but I wanted an infusion of color: a bold blue area rug made those warm neutrals pop. (Plus, I carried the darker tones to the tabletop with smoky hurricane candle holders.)
This room has a ton of natural light, and I didn’t want to block those windows. A slim china cabinet in a complementary wood tone could fit in easily, adding storage but not heaviness. Similarly, I chose this midcentury bar cart for its open design and metallic shine: It would be easy to wheel anywhere the party goes, but could also be right at home in any corner of the room. Finally, I added a faux eucalyptus tree — always say yes to plants — and some subtle wall decor that draws the eye upward and continues the rug’s blue theme.
Option 1: A Statement Centerpiece
This layout makes that statement table a true centerpiece, anchoring it right in the middle of the room. I put the bench on the west side of the table, for a clearer sightline when you walk in. Then I tucked the hutch in the northwest corner of the room, where it’s handy for grabbing dishes and other tableware. Across the room, the bar cart is ready for happy hour.
Option 2: Room to Gather
Next I tried orienting the table east-to-west. This configuration maxes out the width of the room, but I think it could make the room feel airier when you’re seated at the table. I positioned the bench on the side closer to the door, so things wouldn’t feel too crowded by the cabinet against the eastern wall. I liked the bar cart in the northwest corner as its own distinct drinks station.
Option 3: Cozy Dining
Finally, I played with creating a dining nook. Nestled inside the two sets of windows it made for a cozy atmosphere and great views. For balance, I put the hutch flush along the west wall, with the eucalyptus tucked in the corner for a pop of greenery. I liked how the bar cart just reached the window sill, adding function without getting in the way.
The Room Plan tool made it really easy to see which layouts made sense and which didn’t. And I appreciated that if I wanted to change my decor style or opt for a different color scheme, it would be as easy as clicking “replace” on an item and browsing the relevant library again. And because Room Plan is designed to understand spatial concerns like perspective and scale, I knew that whatever I designed would actually work in real life. It makes exploring all those possibilities way more fun.
