Bedroom with large built-in storage and cozy nook

This year, I’ve been making a slow and steady effort to change up my bedroom. It’s usually the last part of any home that gets any love, after all, and while I’ve poured time and money into my living room, kitchen, and dining room to make them all cute and livable, the bedroom I share with my husband has always been an afterthought — all you need, after all, is a bed, some pillows, and a dresser or two.

But earlier this year, we bought a new mattress, bed frame, and nightstands, and after our wedding in late 2024, we also got new sheets. The last step in this great zhuzhing of the bed was, naturally, pillows. But I just couldn’t figure out what I wanted.

I like to have a lot of pillows in a bed — somewhere between four and six is great — and I want them to have varying degrees of firmness: I like a firm, a medium firm, and a supersoft pillow that I can swap out depending on how I want to sleep that day. That’s why I was so excited when I had the opportunity to test Peacock Alley’s down-alternative pillows — a bouncy, medium-firm pillow that has become my new favorite (and made me feel like I only need one pillow to sleep, something I’ve never experienced before.)

What Is the Peacock Alley Down-Alternative Pillow?

The Peacock Alley Down-Alternative Pillow is a pillow that comes in two different sizes — standard and king — and two firmness levels: medium and firm. Since I only have a queen-size bed, I opted for the standard medium pillow, and I got two — one for each side of the bed. I also added some pillow protectors to help protect my pillow from any manner of stains or bugs (living in New York, this is a good idea, trust me).

The pillows are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, which is a textile safety test that ensures that these pillows have passed lab tests and that they’re safe to rest on. The pillows are easy to clean — machine wash cold in a washing machine and dry on low heat in a dryer — and they have tons of glowing reviews. The pillow shell is 100% cotton (as are the pillow protectors).

They’re not cheap — $90 a pillow when not on sale, though as of this writing, they’re 20% off with the code ANNI20. The cost is somewhere in between retailers like the Company Store, where a two-pack retails for $59, or Boll & Branch, where a two-pack pillow set can retail for $358.

Why I Love My Peacock Alley Down-Alternative Pillows

My first takeaway is that the pillow is quite bouncy. It’s definitely not a firm pillow or so soft that you sink into it, so I think it’s a true medium feel. I also love that it’s down alternative — making it easier to clean, more hypoallergenic than down, and also, and this is critical at this juncture in my life, it is not food for any type of bug like clothes moths, a scourge that I am currently battling.

I’m a true every-position type of sleeper — I wake up on my back, side, stomach, wherever. I do a lot of moving throughout the night, and this pillow also works no matter how I’m sleeping. (It was even reviewed as the best pillow for side sleepers in 2025 by Mattress Clarity.)

The reviews of these pillows from other customers are similarly glowing. For hot sleepers, one reviewer said the temperature of the pillow “was just right” for late summer, and another called them “perfect.” Another reviewer in June added that they bought just one pillow a few months ago, and “now I have four.”

Perhaps the biggest change, though, is that the generous depth of and bounce on the pillow means that I can comfortably sleep on just one pillow a night, rather than stack my sadder, older pillows on top of one another. It’s definitely better for my neck and provides a sensation that my neck is being supported rather than sinking into something, which I also love. All in all, these are a splurge, but there’s really no better place to splurge than your bed — and as I’m halfway through that process myself, I think this is a totally worth-it buy.
