When Patsy Daley (@patsyplayshouse) and her husband moved into their home, their goal was to make it “look better from the front curb,” as Patsy puts it. The couple embarked on a front door makeover that also included the mudroom and the space under the front windows of the home.

Patsy’s husband is a retired builder, so he did all of the work himself after Patsy found tiles for the project.

The new tiles inspired a bold color palette.

“I spied the most awesome colourful tiles online, and I just absolutely knew instantly that they would be coming to our home,” Patsy says, adding that they were a splurge, but they were essential for the new look.

Patsy and her husband had the exterior of their home professionally painted. It was once a grayish tan, and now it’s a sage green. “We removed the old front door and replaced it with a new ‘old look door’ from Bunnings,” she adds. “We then painted it in a very bold pink (of course).” It’s Dulux’s Fuchsia Berry.

The tiles flow into a mudroom area.

Her husband tiled the original walkway first, “which also encompasses our ‘entrance mud room,’” Patsy says. Because the space is covered by an overhang, Patsy added some decor to this area: a potted tree, some hooks for hanging umbrellas and jackets, and side tables, and now the front area flows nicely with the inside of her home.

“When doing big jobs like these, secondhand and used [items] can be your best friends!” Patsy says, adding that she loves to thrift. “I sourced all the decor items online from FB Marketplace, Temu, [and] Bunnings, and reused some items I already had by DIYing them up and painting them.”

There’s new tile under the front window.

Once the walkway into the front door was finished, Patsy and her husband decided to add more tile under the front window to create a sort of “side porch” sitting area as Patsy calls it, “so that it all flowed together.” Her husband also redesigned the front garden to make it cohesive with the new look.

“We tiled, we added a retro screen … and used some old pavers from our last home to enhance and frame the new garden in front of the porch,” Patsy describes. Now, she has a colorful, personality-packed entryway (and yard!).

Her favorite thrift find for this project is the set of pink chairs that now lives underneath the front window. “I couldn’t breathe till I picked them up!” Patsy says. “Then we set about painting them to fit in. They look awesome.” She also painted some large white planters pink and green.
