Perhaps you’ve had a piece of furniture you loved so much you made it the star of the room. For Jonathan Burton (@guywiththepinktiles), that furniture piece was a yellow console cabinet.

He made it the focal point in his newly revamped multipurpose space (aka movie and game room and office) along with having the walls and floors refinished.

The walls and floors got a glow-up.

“I stripped the room back so that it would be a blank canvas,” Jonny says of the room, which he previously decorated in a gray, white, and black color that he describes as “cold, dull, and unwelcoming.”

He had new herringbone floors installed by a professional as well as new paneling put on the walls, which he had professionally painted. “For the walls and paneling, I used Farrow & Ball’s All White,” Jonny says — and the white paint made the biggest difference and makes the room feel much brighter, he says.

The secret to this makeover? Spray paint.

Speaking of bright, Jonny wanted to include more pops of bright color. “We upcycled old furniture and items by spraying them bright, fun colors,” Jonny says. His husband, Samuel, found the hex color code for the Mustard console cabinet desk, and locker cabinet, and the pair brought spray paint in an exact color match to transform a side table, mirror, and more. “It 100% paid off,” he says.

“The spraying was a bit out of my comfort zone as it’s something I’ve never done before,” he adds.

Even the (automated) window treatment got a spray paint makeover.

Jonny also spray-painted the blinds in his space sage green to match the desk and window frame. The blinds are electric — part of a fully automated upgrade to the room.

“My husband has always wanted a voice-controlled room using Alexa, so I decided to buy WiFi sockets, bulbs, light switches and an electric blind that can all be voice-controlled,” Jonny says.

He also added a new projector for movie nights, of course, and had professional help with building a screen. To see another renovation in Jonny and Samuel’s house, check out their bathroom makeover.

Correction: A previous version of this article mistakenly said the homeowners spray painted a lamp and shelf. The homeowners actually spray painted a side table, mirror, door, and blinds.
