Living room with large plants, a wooden coffee table, a gray sofa, and a dog lounging on a sectional.

When you pick up a hanging plant from the nursery or grocery store, it often comes in a pot with a plastic hanger that most of us either deal with or ditch as soon as the plant makes it home. But one content creator figured out how to make these basic plastic hangers beautiful, and you’ll never want to throw one away again. All you need is some macramé cord or rope and glue, and you’re ready to DIY.

“Don’t throw away your ugly plastic plant hanger — do this instead!” Tina Le Mac wrote in a recent caption. “Who knew that creating spiral knot friendship bracelets at 10 years old would come in handy?”

Le Mac essentially solved a common problem many plant parents might be familiar with — the lack of charm run-of-the-mill plastic planters have. “For years, I would just throw these away because they never matched the vision,” Le Mac said. “So I decided to do something about it, and she’s definitely getting an upgrade with this beautiful macramé cord.”

How to Transform Plastic Plant Hangers

This hanger upgrade started by Le Mac applying a bit of glue to the hook and wrapping it with macramé cord. Once the hook was covered, she started tying spiral knots (those same knots you learned at summer camp!) around the three prongs of the hanger.

Once the hanger prongs are completely covered, you’re done! Reattach the hanger to the plant pot, and take a step back to enjoy your hard work.

“Now we have a way cuter plant hanger that matches the vibe, and we did it in under an hour!” Le Mac said.

“Thank you so much for sharing this!!!” one person commented, adding, “I hate not using the black hanging pots that my plants come in since they are just so good for the plant. I just hate how it looks but definitely [will] be doing this for all my 20 hanging black pots.”

Someone else wrote, “You are a GENIUS!!!! Totally doing this to all of my ugly store-bought plant hangers now!!!! Ughhhh I’m so excited for this lol.”

Rather than ditch them, DIY your plastic plant hangers instead to make them look prettier. It’s a great way to use what you already have!
