The “Gorgeous” Pottery Barn Convertible Desk I Haven’t Stopped Thinking About for Months Is Finally on Sale
After having looked at countless pieces of furniture for AT’s Personal Shopper series, I often feel like I’ve seen it all. But then, a retailer surprises me with a gorgeous marble entryway table that can also be used as a dining table for tiny nooks, or a movie theater-style sectional that can fit in a studio. Indeed, there are a handful of pieces that stay in my mind for months after I test them, so it’s always exciting when I get to see an innovative design and instantly know that it’s special. That was how I felt when I tested Pottery Barn’s Cayman L-Shape Rotating Desk last year.
I’d seen L-shaped desks before, but never one that could convert into a smaller or larger shape the way this one does, and certainly not a desk as pleasing to the eye as this one. If your home office could use an upgrade, now’s the perfect time to shop the Cayman desk for less because it’s on sale! You’ll just want to hurry while the discount lasts.
What Is the Cayman L-Shape Rotating Desk?
Clearly, this is not your basic rotating desk. In fact, I didn’t even realize it could do that when I first saw it. I viewed the desk in the Biscotti finish, a cool-toned ivory that looks not unlike Pottery Barn’s signature Seadrift wood finish. Although the desk is not on sale in this color, you can get it for $500 off in either Warm Black or Antique Umber. It’s made of sustainably sourced mango wood, which is kiln-dried to prevent warping and cracking.
Of course, the desk has two sections, one of which lies on top of the other and rotates out to double your surface area. When closed, the desk measures 50 inches long, 20 inches deep, and 30 inches tall. When you pull the top layer out and to the side, you get two such surfaces in an L-shaped configuration. No matter the layout, the Cayman desk will look sleek and sophisticated in your workspace.
Why I Love the Cayman L-Shape Rotating Desk
I test my fair share of convertible furniture, be it sleeper sofas or lift-top coffee tables, and it’s sometimes a struggle to reconfigure them by myself. I was initially worried the Cayman desk would be too heavy to rotate on my own, but I quickly discovered that it couldn’t have been easier. The bottom section, which stays put, remained securely in place as I grabbed ahold of the top section and fanned it out. It rotated seamlessly as I positioned the desk into a 90-degree angle. Just like that, I had doubled the amount of surface space and positioned the desk into a cozy corner configuration.
The design of the Cayman desk makes it so versatile. As my initial review notes, “The desk is incredibly compact when not expanded, which is why I deemed it the best option for small spaces. But even if you don’t have a dedicated home office, it’s still nice to have the option of a larger tabletop — especially if you plan on eventually moving into a bigger apartment.” Plus, the possibility of two surfaces means you could have multiple things going on at once, like work and lunch on separate desktops, or using one surface as a storage or display area for decor.
Finally, there’s no denying that the Cayman desk is incredibly stylish. I found its smooth mango wood to be velvety soft to the touch, although this also means you’ll want to use coasters at all times. If I ever see another desk that’s as simultaneously practical and luxurious as this one, I’ll let you know. But for now, this is my top pick for any home office.
