I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

Small-space living — even when it’s within 200 square feet — is definitely doable. It just takes a bit of outside-the-box thinking, and also a commitment to finding multipurpose furniture. Just take Bailey Heldmar’s former 200-square-foot New York City apartment, which is one of the four tiny spaces toured in the video above, for example.

When Bailey first moved in, she admitted that the apartment’s layout was a “quirk” that quickly became a design challenge. Instead of pushing all her furniture up against the walls, she wanted to create separate zones and use furniture to define them. What helped with that goal was purchasing a stylish and super-smart loveseat.

Pottery Barn’s Storage Sofa Really Benefitted This Small Apartment

Pottery Barn Teen’s Burnett Loveseat Set worked with Bailey’s apartment because it matched her cottagecore aesthetic and, according to her, the measurements (64″ wide x 32″ deep x 34″ high) were a perfect fit.

“The best part was that there’s actually storage in the cushions,” Bailey said at the time of the House Tour. “So I was able to store winter coats and things I don’t use very often there.” Finding storage areas in a small apartment is always a challenge. Some people opt for bins under the bed, but that’s not always an option if you have a bed frame that sits low to (or directly on) the ground.

The loveseat set comes in 15 different colors and fabrics, so it’ll fit into any home’s style. If your layout is tricky, you can split the seating and use two chairs instead of a connected sofa. The two storage spots under the cushions, which are just over two feet deep, can hold not just clothing, but also books, sheets, extra shoes — whatever you need.

If you’re moving into a small space or looking for a dual-purpose furniture item, consider Pottery Barn Teen’s Burnett Loveseat Set. While it might seem like a “splurge,” as Bailey put it, it’s a worthwhile investment because you get comfort, a timeless look, and helpful storage all in one.
