I can feel fall creeping in, and my living room needs to change with it. I have a mission to transform my living room into a cozier space without breaking the bank — so I reached out to a few pro stagers for the cheapest ways to instantly make my space more cozy. While I’m doing this for cozy vibes, you could also look at it if you’re planning on putting your home on the fall market, too. The pros offered these six brilliant, accessible, and affordable ideas that are so easy, you’ll wonder how you didn’t come up with them yourself.

Accessorize with Plush Pillows

Imagine sinking into your sofa at the end of the day, surrounded by pillows. This simple accessory offers plenty of ways to create a cozy space. Incorporate different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures to add intrigue. You can also save money by just swapping out your current pillow covers for ones with a fall theme. If you don’t have any pillows, you can find them affordably at places like Costco or Target, or, if you want to splurge a bit, Anthropologie.

Destiny Boyd, Calico Corners‘ in-house design consultant, recommends customizing your space with “fringes, trims, tapes, and contrasting backs.” She also suggests alternating pillows with character and pattern for greater visual appeal. “Your spaces crave texture, color, and detail. Those are the items that begin to tell your family story throughout your home and are some of the best ways to showcase personality.”

Layer Soft Fabrics

From blankets to throw rugs and curtains, textiles create depth and warmth in a living room. The softer they are, the cozier your family room will feel. You probably already own some throw blankets (I do!), so this is a free tip — but there are so many fuzzy blankets to buy that you can take with you if you’re staging your home to sell.

Dr. Marcia Layton Taylor, co-author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Staging Your Home to Sell, says, “Using soft fabrics can amp up the coziness factor, so spreading pretty throw blankets across the edge of a sofa or on the back of a chair can make a space feel more inviting. Put down a rug to define a sitting area in a family or living room.”

Layer Lighting Options (or Harness Natural Light)

Swap out bright light bulbs for warmer tones that radiate a soft, golden glow. Lamps are a better alternative to harsh overhead lighting and cast beautiful shadows to create a relaxing ambience. Candles, lanterns, and sconces are other ways to layer lighting and enhance tranquility.

Of course, natural light is always best, regardless of the season, and best of all, it’s a free resource to harness. If you plan to sell your home, Danielle Castagna, an interior design expert at Level Frames, says natural light “can make spaces feel larger, inspiring potential buyers about what they could do to make the space their own. When staging your home, clean your windows and make sure that furniture isn’t blocking natural light sources.”

Harvest Decor from Your Backyard

Spruce up a cozy living room with natural elements. “Large plants — faux or real — and vases of flowers envelope a room in nature and add a layer of intimate insulation,” says Andrea Thompson, an interior decorator at Andrea Design Services.

To celebrate the fall season, consider collecting items from your backyard, such as twigs, pine cones, acorns, and leaves. Hugo Mamo of Simon Mamo Real Estate says that “you can add seasonal touches without costing much. A bowl of pine cones, a branch of autumn leaves in a vase, or a simple table runner with seasonal fruit like apples or pears adds charm and warmth to any room.”

Realtor and owner of Great Colorado Homes, Andrew Fortune, reiterates this suggestion. “Grab a few pine cones from your yard and toss them in a bowl on the kitchen counter. Buyers love seeing a hint of the outdoors, especially in autumn. Just don’t make it look cluttered.” (And be careful not to bring critters in with you.)

Opt for Neutral Tones with Pops of Color

According to licensed associate real estate broker at SERHANT, Krista Nickols, “neutral tones are a blank canvas that you can paint with pops of color with small accessories.” They are timeless and soothing, providing a versatile backdrop for your favorite decorative pieces or bolder accents. Opt for a smoky beige color with a teal swivel chair. You could also brighten earthy neutral tones with colorful canvas artwork.

There are plenty of ways to stage your living room with neutral autumn decor, too. “Small white pumpkins or assorted gourds neatly arranged in a bowl work as a great, neutral, fall-centric centerpiece in an entryway or in the dining room,” says Matthew Melinger, a real estate agent at Brown Harris Stevens.

Rearrange Furniture

A cozy living room is the perfect space to gather with friends and family, so rearrange your furniture to accommodate close communication. Alexei Morgado, founder of Lexawise Real Estate Exam Preparation, says, “Repositioning furniture may create a more natural flow, in addition to using mirrors to create the sense of looking at a ‘larger vista.'”

Wes True from Pella Windows and Doors of Omaha and Lincoln elaborates on this further. “Instead of lining furniture along the wall, angle pieces to create more intimate conversation areas. This little change makes a living room so much more welcoming,” he says. To take this expert advice, try placing a sofa and chair in an L-shape near a coffee table.
