Paint plus pattern is a great formula for creating a striking transformation in a room, especially if you love color. It’s a formula Brandi Katherine Herrera (@alivelymanner) knows well, as she’s added paint, paneling, and pattern to several rooms in her cozy, colorful cottage originally built in 1918.

In her dining room, for example, she added paneling and painted it bright green with a fun wallpaper to match. And in the living room, she added the same board and batten treatment but chose a new paint color. And she added pattern with fabric. Read more about the living room makeover below.

The walls got a gold board and batten treatment.

Brandi refers to the original blank white walls and builder-grade in this home as “poorly flipped.” “By the time we discovered it in late 2023, the cottage’s original details had been completely stripped away,” she says.

Adding board and batten to the walls added some of the quaintness back in, and Brandi selected a goldish-tan (Backdrop’s Tanlines) for the paint color. (She also had a vintage sofa reupholstered in a gold to match!)

There are colorful paint details throughout.

The walls are painted a brighter white (Backdrop’s Supermoon) than before, and the front door is a bright red (Backdrop’s Bada Bing!).

Brandi used a lot of raw wood IKEA and Unfnshed furniture throughout the house, and you’ll see some in this room painted in the same bright red.

The cafe curtains were a DIY project.

“My mom and I made the cafe curtains in the living room,” Brandi adds. The duo used a mid-weight linen with Josef Franks’ “Vegetable Tree” pattern for both windows, and they used the same fabric on a couple of couch throw pillows.

“The cottage is now a color-filled, character-infused ode to its original owners,” Brandi says. — And its new owners (Brandi; her husband, Zachary, and their cat, Yves) will enjoy their time there, too.
