Art filled eclectic living room.

I believe that it’s okay to have a home that feels lived in, with a little bit of clutter here and a touch of dust there. But the one thing I cannot stand is an exposed cord or an ugly (albeit necessary) electronic device in my carefully curated space. This rings particularly true for my internet router — a big, awkwardly-shaped box that I can’t live without and also can’t stand to look at.

The problem with my router is that I live in an old apartment building, and the only place it can function is on the floor next to my antique credenza. This area is the focal point of my living room, aka, the router is the ultimate eyesore. I’ve made a few failed attempts to camouflage the box and cords, but only recently found a solution that actually works well both functionally and aesthetically.

While browsing the organization aisles at Target, a lightbulb went off as I came across two super-cute baskets with excellent structure. I realized I could stack one face-down over the router to hide all the cords and electronics, then sit the other on top with a plant inside to create a faux planter look. So, I did what any seasoned Target shopper would do and left with more than what I came for — including the baskets — and headed home to experiment with this DIY decor hack.

To create a more bohemian look, I chose two different baskets with similar structural details, including a metal frame to help keep their shape. I used the large coiled basket from Target’s Threshold brand as the base. It’s made from a natural, grass-like material that adds some nice texture to my space. Plus, the 20-inch circumference fits perfectly over my internet router. It’s also super structurally sound and can hold a lot of weight (I’ve had my three-year-old monstera plant sitting on top of it for well over a month with no issues).

The other basket was a little taller and slimmer, making it an excellent plant pot cover. The exact style I chose is sadly no longer available, but Target has plenty of chic alternatives that are just as effective, like the same coiled Threshold basket in a smaller size if you want more of a matchy-matchy look. I also love the idea of trying a totally different texture and going with this metal wire basket (if you aren’t trying to hide a router, you could also stack two of these together to create the chicest mid-century modern planter).

And just like that, I now have the perfect (stylish!) two-in-one router cover and faux plant stand, thanks to just two Target baskets that blend in with my decor. Both of these cost $75 total, but you can also find more affordable, mismatched styles at a thrift store, or use ones you already have at home. Just make sure they’re sturdy enough to stack!
