I’m lucky enough to live in a Brooklyn apartment with an extra bedroom, but that doesn’t mean it sits empty. I keep my Peloton in there, as well as my adjustable dumbbell set. I’ve struggled to find a piece of furniture that could convert this space into a guest room when needed (read: every few months or so when friends or family come to stay with me and my husband), but wouldn’t take up too much valuable floor space the rest of the time.

I also wanted something my 60-plus-year-old parents could sleep well on — not just young friends with 30-year-old spines. You can see my dilemma. I needed a sofa-bed solution that was actually comfortable and could fit in a small space. That’s why I was so excited when I found the Sabai Eclipse Sleeper Sofa and got the opportunity to test it.

Quick Overview

A Quick Look at the Sabai Eclipse Sleeper Sofa

  • It’s easy to assemble with tools you likely already have.
  • You can easily convert the sofa into the sleeper.
  • It’s made with an FSC-certified plywood frame, PFAS-free recycled velvet and hemp, high resiliency foam, and rubberized coconut fiber.
  • It has a comfortable sofa and surprisingly spacious and firm mattress.
  • Sabai offers replacements for any part of the furniture that gets worn down.

Design Features That Stand Out

For one, I absolutely love the look of the sofa. It’s what drew me to the manufacturer in the first place. I wanted the sofa to be, above all, functional: small-space-friendly, actually comfortable, and something I wouldn’t feel guilty having a guest sleep on. But I also wanted it to look cool, and the Sabai definitely does that.

The Sabai Eclipse Sleeper Sofa is super cushy, with a fun, maximalist pattern. I chose the Field Natural Hemp sleeper sofa with natural piping for its sort of vintage print. I knew it would bring a lot of personality to a room that is defined only by function (as a workout space).

As for the comfort level, it delivers. It’s so comfortable when it’s set in the sofa position, and the mattress, for a sleeper sofa, is top-tier. I love that it’s not a spring mattress — I’ve never had a good experience sleeping on a sofa-bed with a spring base — and that the Sabai’s pull-out foam mattress is actually the seat of the bed.

According to the website, it should take about 30 minutes to set up the sleeper sofa yourself, but if you’re like me and are hopeless at putting furniture together, you might want to hire a pro (like a TaskRabbit) or ask for help from a friend or loved one.

The only thing that I would caution potential buyers about is the dimensions of this piece. While it obviously takes up less space than a traditional queen- or king-size bed — the sofa is 70 inches wide, including the arms — it’s also 33 inches deep, which is excellent for lounging, but does take up significant floor space. If you have super-limited square footage, a smaller sofa-bed (like the Eclipse Sleeper Chair) or a futon that extends parallel to the sofa, rather than perpendicular to it, might be a better option for you.  I’d also note that because the mattress is very low to the ground when folded out, it might not be the best for guests who might have a hard time getting up and down from the floor.

How It Performed

I had guests stay on the mattress for about four nights, and didn’t hear a single complaint (despite prodding them and letting them know I would be reviewing the sofa itself). Both guests were tall — 5’8” and somewhere above 6’0” — and said they had plenty of room on the sofa bed. One noted that the pull-out mattress was on the firmer side, but that they preferred sleeping that way, so it was perfect for them. The other guest said it was “perfect for this sort of situation,” as in having guests stay for a few nights.

I also like how easy it is to set up the sofa bed. With other sofa beds, it can be a bit wonky getting just the right angle on the mattress frame to pull it out of the sofa and extend it. All you have to do to set up the Sabai Eclipse Sleeper Sofa is pull the pillows off, unfold the cushions and, voila! You have a bed. My guests reset the sofa bed on their own without me having to show them how to do it, which is also a bonus, and if a guest wanted to put the bed away during the daytime, they could do so in just a minute or two.

What we love

  • The look of the sofa — genuinely cute and surprisingly comfortable
  • Easy to set bed up and put it away
  • Deep seats make it a comfortable sleeper sofa when in sofa position

Good to know

  • If you want a truly small-space-friendly sofa, this might not be the best option
  • The mattress extends out, rather than sideways, so it takes up significant floor space when extended
  • Not a spring mattress, and a bit firm, if you’re not used to a firm mattress

Should You Buy the Sabai Eclipse Sleeper Sofa?

If you’re a person who has guests stay with them a few times a year, and are looking for a sofa bed that you won’t feel bad about putting guests on or won’t hate sleeping on yourself (after all, I usually let my parents and in-laws stay in the real bedroom), this is a great find — doubly so if you’re looking for something legitimately cool-looking. I chose the striped colorway, but there are multiple options that are drool-worthy, including the Thistle with Amber, which is a baby blue with a pop of deep, burnt-red piping.

However, if you’re seeking something genuinely compact or that folds away completely, look at the Sleeper Chair for an even more streamlined guest bed solution.
