As anyone who loves antiquing will tell you, the best finds are often trinket-size — and vintage sets of salt and pepper shakers are pure gold for collectors. Vintage sets are just so cute, kitschy, and easy to display if you’re in a possession of just a few pairs. But if you’re looking to take your collection to the next level, it’s time to move your shakers beyond the kitchen. Plus, you don’t have to use them for seasoning alone.

Antique lovers on Instagram are reacting to a viral video after one user shared a couple of different ways she reimagines her vintage salt and pepper shakers around her home. And these tips are perfect for people who love plants as much as they love their shakers.

Vintage Salt-and-Pepper Shakers Are Perfect for Florals

“Tuesday tiny thrift finds,” Amy from @yours.truly_home wrote in a recent Instagram caption. “Thrifted my first set of salt and pepper shakers last year, Mr Fox and Hedgehog. That kick started my mini collection and now here we are …”

In the short video, Amy shares how she uses some of her salt and pepper shakers as mini bud vases and others as slow waterers for potted plants. The holes at the top are the perfect size for small sprigs of baby’s breath or wildflowers, plus the hole at the bottom is ideal for keeping plant soil moist throughout the week.

“I just pop the little plastic out of the bottom, fill with water, and push it gently in the soil,” Amy explained in a comment asking her how to turn them into slow waterers. “I would only use it for low maintenance plants that don’t need a lot of water!”

And people are loving these salt and pepper shaker display tips — especially because Amy just gave everyone two great reasons to keep their collecting habit going strong.

“It takes all of my restraint not to buy every cute salt/pepper shaker I see,” one person commented on her post, adding, “But you just gave me five reasons to buy them from now on!!! Let’s go antiquing!!!”

“I’m so glad I’m not alone, I think I have about 30 sets purely for decor,” another person wrote, with someone else commenting, “Okay, cute! Now I know what to do with all my grandma’s left-behind salt and pepper shakers!”

Someone else said that they use their salt and pepper shakers to collect their cat’s fallen whiskers, which is also such a cute idea. The possibilities are seemingly endless! You can source salt and pepper shakers from antique stores and secondhand websites, or you can pick them up new from sites like Wayfair. These tomato shakers are so cute and have a vintage vibe.

As if you needed an excuse to keep collecting vintage salt and pepper shakers, Amy just gave you a couple of reasons to keep it up. You’ll never look at your collection the same way again!
