For many people, more time spent indoors has meant more time to dedicate to revisiting favorite hobbies and slowing down in general. For actress and entrepreneur Sarah Michelle Gellar, this has meant embracing life at home and quality time spent with her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr. and their two children, Charlotte and Rocky.

Gellar recently partnered up with Wells Fargo Active Cash Card to help Americans pursue their passion, whether it’s an old hobby, passion project, or a side-hustle that they’ve always dreamed of starting. In an interview with Apartment Therapy, Gellar spoke about her passions and how she keeps both herself and her kids inspired.

“I think it’s really important to sort of model things for your children. People always ask me— I’m a big reader, I always have been —‘how do you encourage that with your children?’ and the best way to do that is to model it for them,” she says.

Gellar explains that she’s a keen collector of first-edition books, a hobby that has brought her tons of joy for years. She’s since built up a treasured collection, from first-edition Dr. Seuss books to a complete collection of Arthur Rackham books, who’s her favorite illustrator.

“Collecting first-edition books started for me when I was on “Buffy [the Vampire Slayer]” once I first started, you know, earning pay checks where I could really spend it on something that was a passion, not just a necessity for myself.” she recalls. “A lot of our cast got new cars, and for me, it was like, books.”

She also explains that it’s important that she passes on this creativity and passion to her kids, making sure she buys them something that they’re actually going to want to pick up and read.

“For a long time my son didn’t want to pick up books, but he loves cars… he’s fascinated by cars. So, I started getting car magazines for him.” she recalls. “He loved to read articles on how they built cars, and different engines, and how they use computers to build these cars, and then it sparked his imagination. And I always tell people, it’s not what you’re reading, it’s that you’re reading. Even if your kids love graphic novels or comics, keep that up,”

As a hobby that’s loved by the whole family, it’s no surprise that Gellar has a library room at home — which is, unsurprisingly, her favorite room of the house. With a little TLC and reorganization, it also became Gellar’s go-to spot for Zoom calls and working from home.

“So, during COVID once school opened up, and we started to sort of you know, bubble with kids that we go to school with, one of my daughter and son’s friends in both of their grades, the mom, is an organizer. Every time we’d be on Zoom, she would look at my books and she’s like, ‘I can’t look at that mess behind you anymore. I’m coming over and I’m organizing your library, ’ ” she says. “One day, sure enough, she showed up at my doorstep and redid my entire library.”

The result? A color-coordinated bookshelf that not only shows off Gellar’s collection with ease, but also brings in texture and personality to the space, making the corner bookshelf a statement piece to be envied.
