This two-bedroom condo in Vancouver’s South Granville neighborhood is the home of graphic designer Stephanie Talbot and her husband, Kale. The couple’s 1279-square-foot space was built in 1952, and is located in what she describes as an iconic building in Vancouver.

Stephanie describes their DIY dining nook as their "go-to spot for morning coffee, afternoon reading, and sometimes we even shift our table over into the corner to create a cute nook dining area or work station. It sits so perfectly underneath our gallery wall — with art we have collected over the years from talented friends, designers, and various markets while traveling."

Because of its age and history, this unit offered a more unique layout than the kinds currently available in newer builds. And the creative couple has added to the condo’s story with a mix of mid-century modern style blended with a touch of Scandi — and a few unexpected design choices, like painting all their doors and door frames black.

“My husband and I bought our condo three years ago and immediately fell in love with the openness and natural light that it brought in,” Stephanie writes. Rather than instantly start making changes to the space, Stephanie and Kale took a slower approach — they lived in the space for six months first before making any decorating and design decisions.

Stephanie describes the before as “very millennial grey and white. The past owners had renovated it in a very generic way. Not bad, just less than exciting.” And while she says they haven’t done any major updates to the space, they have added a ton of personality, thanks to the “power of paint” and a great collection of furniture and decor.

“We’ve loved filling our space with vintage finds, art, and plenty of plants! Our style leans mid-century modern with sprinklings of inspiration from various stylistic eras — a little bit Scandi and some modern touches that make the space feel eclectic in many ways.”

"We get asked about the mirror in our bedroom allll the time," Stephanie describes. "It's been my biggest DIY to date; it's over six feet tall and I made the frame with spray foam, fiber glass tape, wire, and plaster, and it laid on our bedroom floor for about three months while I finished it. Bless my patient husband's heart! I documented some of the process on my personal Instagram. Fun fact, Bethany Brill inspired me to make the mirror, seeing how beautiful hers were. I actually DM'd her a ton during the process to ask for advice and she was so helpful!"

“Kale and I both work from home and wanted our space to be inspiring and cozy — and we love to host, so we wanted to create a space that is versatile enough to host guests for a quiet drink all the way through to a large dinner party.
