As AT’s Senior Style Editor, I cover the latest interior design trends, expert decorating ideas, and must-see home products. Whenever I’m not keeping tabs on the next TikTok “core” or buzzy IKEA collection, I’m most likely reading, online shopping, or looking for the best tacos in New York (recs are encouraged).

Here’s a quick round of this-or-that: Paint or wallpaper? Minimalist or maximalist? Gold or silver? The last of these three can feel particularly divisive, but if the collective obsession with French-inspired gilded mirrors and adjacent-looking antique brass accents is any indication, gold has been enjoying a major design heyday. Don’t worry; this finish won’t ever go out of style, but it’s arguably now getting dethroned by silver, chrome, and polished nickel finishes.

Decorating with gold vs. silver all comes down to your personal style preferences, and both metals tend to fluctuate in terms of interior design popularity. In fact, designer Sarah Storms of Styled by Storms notes that silver preceded the brass trend that initially took off in the mid-2000s. Recently, though, based on marketplace patterns and trade shows, the pendulum seems to be shifting back to silver. Even 38% of designers polled in Apartment Therapy’s annual State of Home Design survey agreed that chrome will take center stage in 2025  — and for good reason.

“People miss the shine and the little hit of ‘jewelry’-like finishes,” Storms explains of this silver comeback. “There is something truly classic and refined about this finish, even if it is used in a modern way.”

To that end, chrome and polished nickel pieces tied to any era (from Art Deco to the post-modern) feel versatile and timeless enough to mingle well with a range of different design styles. Storms even associates the look with “masculine Ralph Lauren collections that help to brighten deep moody fabrics and textures.”

You also don’t have to trade off between exclusively using silver or gold, according to New York-based designer Adnan Anwar. “I think one of the most common misconceptions in interior design is that you can only have one metal finish in a room — that gold, iron, and silver can’t coexist,” he says. “The magic is in the mix. The contrast between warm and cool, or polished and aged finishes, makes a space look more dynamic, balanced, collected, and timeless.”

Anwar typically gravitates toward chrome lighting and mirrors, especially in more traditionally designed homes, but the key is to incorporate multiple silver accents into the same room vs. just one stand-alone statement piece. “If you’re going to commit to mixing, try to echo that finish elsewhere, even if it’s something as small as a figurine or frame on a work of art,” he adds.

Whether you’ve been #teamsilver all along or want to start dipping your toes in this trend, I rounded up a few furniture and decor finds with chrome or stainless steel finishes to help you get started.

MOFALLA Chair
$100

IKEA’s recent 80th anniversary line, the Nytillverkad collection, has been dedicated to relaunching formerly archived designs in the 21st century. That involves — you guessed it! — plenty of vintage-inspired chrome finishes. One key standout has to be the new MOFALLA chair, a cool fold-out seat with chrome-plated steel legs that’s a remake of a previous 1978 model.

Cordless Iron Table Lamp
$50

Modern metal table lamps have been all the rage, but I especially love this low-profile Zara Home find (it’s just 4.7” tall!). The wireless, rechargeable design can sit just about anywhere, from your dresser to a bookshelf.

Sophie Lou Jacobsen Squiggle Pitcher
$175$140

Designed by Sophie Lou Jacobsen, this squiggly stainless steel pitcher is the moment. Honestly, you don’t ever even have to use it — it’s beautiful enough to simply live as just a decorative object — but consider this the perfect excuse to prep more spring batch cocktails or buy your favorite grocery store flowers.

Jute Crate
$45

For a smaller shiny touch, this mixed-material H&M storage crate features a textured jute canvas that helps soften the subtle silver frame. Even just one of these on the floor beside your desk or sofa can keep books, magazines, and paperwork organized in style.

Chantel Curved Metallic Wall Mirror
$398

This pill-shaped Anthropologie mirror comes in chrome or brass (yes, you can have the best of both worlds!), and the skinny silhouette has tight, narrow wall spaces covered. Its silver frame pulls double duty as an added brightening surface — ideal for faking more natural light — which you can pair with a matching picture frame or nearby lamp for a cohesive look.

Ozzy Side Table
$299$200

West Elm’s glass-and-chrome Ozzy side table may read super modern, but it’s minimalist enough to work into any decor scheme without overwhelming the space (looking at you, small living rooms). The two tiers leave plenty of creative styling opportunities, from books and plants to candles and vases, but just make sure you don’t crowd too much onto the simple round silhouette.

Radius Frames, 4"x6"
$30

A classic silver picture frame will always be timeless, and this thin collection from Pottery Barn can make any family photo look home stager-approved, thanks to the rounded frame and wide mat. Choose from three different sizes to display together in a cluster or spread out across various tabletops.

Flex 360 Luxe Toilet Brush
$70

Yes, even your toilet can get the silver treatment. Hear me out: I know $70 seems absurd for a cleaning tool, but because there’s only so much you can do to decorate the bathroom (especially in a rental), this stylish Joseph Joseph toilet brush needs to be on your radar. The stainless steel holder can pretty up any bathroom corner, and the highly functional trifold-style bristled brush will actually put your current one to shame — trust me.
