For my two-person household, we have quite a few keys — ones for our place, detached garage, both of our cars, and even several spares, just in case. The overwhelming amount of dangling key rings made creating a system feel impossible and definitely not chic. Inevitably, the keys landed in the kitchen junk drawer. And even though I tried to make it seem intentional (by gathering them in a brass bowl) the pile would always end up looking cluttered, and finding the exact keys I needed most in the moment was difficult.

Then I learned about this unexpected hack of using a spoon rack for storage, and thought it could work for my keys too.

Why a Spoon Rack Works as a Brilliant Storage Gem

A spoon rack mounts onto your wall and acts as a display for all your spoons — each one placed on a notch. As demonstrated in this video by thrifting pro Amy of @yours.truly_home, you can see how she uses a thrifted wooden spoon rack to store jewelry, flowers, and other little things.

While you can certainly look for a spoon rack at a thrift store, you can also search online for one you like that’ll be delivered right to your door. I came across a vintage-style spoon rack on Amazon, and it instantly reminded me of those key stations you’d see behind a hotel reception desk of some fabulous lobby. Once it arrived, I hung it in the hallway nearest the front door and moved the keys from the drawer.

The evenly spaced grooves, while not designed for keys, turned out to be perfect for them. Each set gets its own slot, instantly making the whole drop zone feel more considered and elevated. Now each key ring has a designated slot behind the ornate wood frame and glass front. It’s not just easier to find what I need — it finally looks intentional. It feels like a real system, not a catch-all.

I’ve tried single-key hooks and smaller racks before, but they always felt a little too minimal for the amount of keys we have, and visually they never quite filled the space in a way that felt finished. This, on the other hand, feels like a moment.

I’m already thinking about taking it a step further with custom hotel-style keychains (or even DIYing a few) to really lean into the look. But even as it is now, our new key station has transformed our daily routines. I haven’t heard the frantic “Have you seen my car keys?” callout echoing through the house since.
