Mid-century modern living room with gray sofa, colorful cushions, wooden coffee table, abstract art, and brick fireplace.

West Elm is one of the most popular furniture retailers, and it’s not hard to see why. Not only does the brand have an expansive collection of home goods, but all of its pieces also fit a specific, highly coveted aesthetic — namely, mid-century modern sophistication. West Elm’s furniture isn’t loud. Instead, it has the power to tie a space together and give it a calming, contemporary aura. For those reasons, it was one of the first stops in our Personal Shopper series.

Are There Any Stores like West Elm?

Whether you’re already familiar with West Elm’s best-selling pieces, have bought furniture from them before, or you’re browsing for your next big-ticket purchase and wish you had some additional options — we’re here to help. We found 12 retailers who have also mastered the mid-century aesthetic and whose products will fit right in with your West Elm pieces. (Some of them might also save you a good chunk of change.) They’re all definitely worth a look!

1. AllModern

With AllModern, the aesthetic is in the name. And compared to many others in its category this retailer is quite affordable, regardless of what you’re looking for. Their popular bed frames, slope dining chairs, and other budget-friendly pieces will elevate every room in your home and last you a lifetime. Take this round dining table, for example. Its wooden legs flare out in a distinctly retro fashion, and the light oak wood finish has a Scandi vibe to it as well. Its round shape makes it small-space-friendly, too.

2. Burrow

Burrow is an editor favorite — especially when it comes to living room seating. Not only are their customizable sofas super stylish, but they also arrive in modules that allow for quick and easy assembly. In particular, the Nomad sofa is a hit among shoppers because of its easy-to-style silhouette, small-space-friendly size, and chic upholstery options. If you opt for the full-grain leather, you’ll find it to be smooth and soft (not to mention highly durable). Of course, Burrow also offers contemporary bedroom and dining room pieces, as well as outdoor furniture.

3. Article

For furniture that looks great in any space, head to Article. Many of their pieces are designed to be easy to assemble and boast streamlined, minimalist silhouettes. The best-selling Lenia Dresser in particular maintains the signature mid-century style Article has built its foundation on, with a clean-lined silhouette and integrated handles with a retro, curved detail. This piece would work well in the bedroom, although it could also reside by your dining table to hold extra dishware, or in the living room as a media console. In other words, it’s a versatile furnishing you’ll have in your home for years to come.

4. Castlery

We have an entire post dedicated to DTC brand Castlery, where we deemed it the “Brooklinen of furniture” thanks to its reasonably priced yet high-quality products. When you shop at Castlery, you’ll find furniture that strikes a balance between contemporary and classic, especially where the living room, bedroom, and dining room are concerned. You’ll find many unique items, such as the Vincent coffee table set, which is actually two small walnut tables pushed together. You can keep them next to each other, or position them separately as side tables should you need a bit of storage space in different areas.

5. Joss & Main

Wayfair has many solid mid-century pieces, but if you want something a little more upscale then you’ll want to check out their sister site, Joss & Main. Their furniture and decor will make your home feel grown-up and add a sophisticated touch wherever you might need it. Adding an accent chair is the quickest way to create an inviting corner, which is why we suggest having a look at the Julina armchair. It arrives fully assembled and sports a sturdy wood frame, which is nicely juxtaposed with moss-green cushions. The chair is pretty enough to double as a work of art, but its reclined silhouette also allows you to kick back and relax.

6. Nathan James

As a company, Nathan James is built on the winning trifecta of style, easy assembly, and affordable prices. You’ll find several Scandi-chic pieces among their many offerings, as well as some classic mid-century designs, such as the Acacia Mid-Century Nightstand. Its long legs help create the illusion of spaciousness when, in reality, this side table could easily fit into the tightest of corners. If you need anything on four legs, whether it’s a table, storage cabinet, or desk, you have to check out this site. A lot of their items have nice accents, too, including rattan panels and brass details.

7. Arhaus

If you’re a fan of West Elm’s sleek style and top-notch craftsmanship, Arhaus is right up your alley. The brand focuses on artisan-crafted furniture and home decor, showcasing unique designs and eco-friendly materials. Picture your place with handcrafted pieces inspired by nature and cultures from around the world — like the Malta Leather Sofa, a plush, bench-style sofa upholstered in supple, hand-finished leather. Whether you’re into Arhaus’ rustic style or eco-conscious values, the brand matches you with carefully selected pieces to fit your style and beliefs.

8. Sundays Furniture

Owned and operated by four friends and designers, Sundays Furniture was born out of a shared goal: to create high-quality, timeless furniture pieces that are built to last and easily accessible. Meeting every Sunday, they established the company (hence the name). Similar to West Elm, Sundays Furniture offers contemporary designs that are stylish and modern. Their Tuck In dining chair is thoughtfully made and totally timeless with its vintage, MCM-inspired shape — it gives off a similar vibe to West Elm!

9. Grandin Road

Unlike the other retailers, Grandin Road doesn’t only specialize in mid-century modern-inspired designs, although you’ll definitely still find a decent number of them on the site. In general, their furniture and decor are neutral in color, and they have a huge clearance section. While browsing we came across this beautiful, MCM-meets-Scandi-style table lamp, which dazzles in brass and sports a pleated linen shade. Its star feature, however, is its built-in USB charging port that’ll easily power up your devices. Place the lamp on your nightstand, side table, or desk for some pleasant ambient lighting.

10. World Market

We’re more familiar with World Market for their giftable decor section and seasonal holiday offerings, but you’ll be happy to learn that they have a pretty impressive furniture section, too. You’ll find some beautiful pieces, such as this mid-century modern media console. It’s largely made of acacia wood, although it also has a vintage walnut finish and subtly angled legs for a bit of MCM flair. World Market’s seating is also very mid-century-modern-inspired; their velvet and leather sofas and chairs serve as strong complementary pieces to the many simple wooden tables and accent cabinets on offer. We could scroll through them all day!

11. CB2

Browsing CB2 is like scrolling through my Pinterest board — luxurious, on-trend furniture and decor finds abound! The items are expensive, I’ll admit, but you can shop confidently knowing you’re getting something that’s meticulously crafted using sustainably sourced materials. We’ve gotten up close and personal with the brand’s sofas, bed frames, and coffee tables, and can confirm that its offerings range from super glam to vintage, MCM-inspired luxury.

Take the Montero bed, for example — it has an eye-catching wraparound frame and a warm walnut finish and subtle details that give it a retro, mid-century modern vibe. Plus, there are roomy storage drawers at the base of the frame!

12. Blu Dot

Blu Dot, the Minneapolis-based furniture brand, offers fresh takes on mid-century modern styles, along with more sleek, sculptural pieces. Everything is made in-house, with form, function, and sustainability at the forefront. The furniture is pricey, but worth it. We know because we’ve tested it all — from sofas and bed frames, to coffee tables and accent chairs.

The Woodrow bed reminds us of something you’d find at West Elm, with its MCM-inspired angled foot and headboard, and subtle curved details. “The frame appears seamless with no visible joints, giving the illusion of a single continuous piece of wood,” noted Senior Home Editor Zee Krstic after testing the frame in-store.
