Three of my great loves are baking, thrifting, and organizing — and nothing thrills me more than finding a vintage piece that brings both character and function into my home. That’s exactly what happened the day I stumbled upon a long, carved wooden tool at a thrift store. I didn’t even know what it was at first; I just knew I needed it.

Turns out, it was a vintage sugar mold, and with a little design guidance from Elana Mendelson, principal designer at Elana Designs, I realized it might be one of the most versatile storage gems you can bring home.

Why Sugar Molds Are the Perfect Storage Gem

Sugar molds (like this one from Amazon) were originally used to shape raw sugar into cones, and while they’re no longer needed in modern baking, their sculptural wooden design makes them a standout decor piece today. Each mold is lined with deep cylindrical wells, offering natural compartments for corralling small items.

“Sugar molds are a great, versatile decor object, especially for people who like pieces with character or a subtle touch,” says Mendelson. “They pop up pretty regularly at thrift stores, estate sales, and vintage markets, and I’m always drawn to them because they’re both sculptural and functional.”

Creative Ways to Use Sugar Molds Around Your Home

Here’s how to put this antique tool to work in surprisingly practical ways.

Hold tea lights or taper candles.

If you love winding down with warm lighting, sugar molds make beautiful candleholders. The individual wells are perfect for tea lights, and if you don’t mind a little wax cleanup, you can even place tapered candles inside for a more dramatic glow.

Store cooking utensils.

Mendelson loves using sugar molds in the kitchen, especially for items you reach for constantly. “Whether it’s standard wooden utensils, tasting spoons, or even herb cuttings for recipes, a sugar mold provides the perfect space to store important items while adding to the space’s overall aesthetic,” she says.

Corral your desk supplies.

If you find a deeper mold, it works beautifully as a minimalist, antique-style desk organizer. Assign each well to something specific — pens, pencils, scissors, markers — and instantly streamline your workspace.

Sort skincare essentials.

Cotton rounds, small serums, travel-size moisturizers, and roll-ons fit neatly inside each opening, turning the mold into a chic countertop caddy. It’s an easy upgrade that makes a bathroom or vanity feel curated.

Display plants or dried florals.

Picture a row of tiny succulents nestled inside the mold — it’s adorable and sculptural, and adds instant charm. Mendelson also suggests “styling a sugar mold on a console with dried florals or as a low centerpiece filled with seasonal accents,” like pine cones or faux berries.

Organize your grab-and-go items.

Keys, sunglasses, earbuds, spare change, or even everyday jewelry all have a natural home in a sugar mold. It keeps those small, easy-to-lose items contained without sacrificing style.
