Although I ultimately chose a fabric sofa when furnishing my apartment last year, I seriously debated getting a leather couch. Not only have I looked at so many sophisticated leather models on my store visits for Apartment Therapy’s Personal Shopper series, but my parents also had leather couches while I was growing up. Fifteen years since they got their living room set, and the sofa and loveseat combo is still going strong, so clearly, leather is one of the most durable seating materials out there.

You can imagine how excited I was to learn, then, that Article recently dropped its best-selling Sven sofa in a new leather color. Although it’s long been available in five earthy neutrals, it now also comes in Taos brown, a warm coffee-colored finish. That’s not the only reason to shop the Sven, though. Danielle, AT’s executive home director, is its number one fan. Keep reading to find out what makes this sofa so special.

What Is the Sven Sofa?

The Sven sofa is upholstered in untreated, full-aniline leather, which has a buttery-soft feel. Instead of being structured, the material will develop a lived-in appearance over time, so creasing and wrinkling are normal. Danielle initially had the 88-inch version, noting, “The leather truly patinas so nicely, and the overstuffed back cushions and tufted single seat cushion are super-comfy, high-end touches you don’t always see at this price point.” Because she used to live in a small space, though, she downsized to the 72-inch loveseat model, which is an ideal apartment size.

Although the Sven has a mid-century modern silhouette, its tufted bench seat and roll side cushions give it a little extra visual appeal, helping it look anything but boring. Still, its clean lines and tapered wood legs keep the sofa easy to style, regardless of your interior aesthetic.

Of all the leather colors, the Charme Tan was probably the warmest, until Article reintroduced the Sven in Taos Brown. This hue is perfect for people who prefer dark-colored furniture, and it’ll help add dimension to your space if your living room feels monotonous.

Why We Love the Sven Sofa

Mid-century modern might’ve had a major resurgence within the past decade, but the truth is, it’ll never go out of style. That holds true for the Sven sofa, too; even with its design-forward details, you can trust that this comfy living room staple will never look outdated. Even better, it’ll hold up well amid daily use. “My Article Sven sofa is still going strong after three years of constant use — watching TV, snacking, and the occasional weekend nap or overnight guest,” Danielle added in her review

Of course, our staffers aren’t the only ones who love the Sven. You’ve probably already seen it on your social media feeds, and Article shoppers similarly can’t seem to get enough of it. “I was not expecting such excellent, high-quality construction and comfort,” one reviewer wrote. “The supersoft but thick aniline dyed leather is gorgeous and has that great leather odor, too. … This sofa far outclasses many $4,000-plus sofas I have seen in stores. Plus, it arrived in less than 2 weeks! What a fabulous piece!”

Now that you have a comprehensive range of leather colors to choose from, don’t hesitate to upgrade your couch if it’s seen better days. The Sven is a bona fide heirloom piece, especially for MCM fans.
