Peek Inside the Real Life LA House from The Holiday, Just Listed for $12M
Calling all Nancy Meyers fans and softly-lit rom-com addicts: the real-life house where The Holiday (with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black) was filmed just want on the market in Southern California—for $11.8 million.
The exteriors of this stunning SoCal hacienda in San Marino served as American Amanda’s (Cameron Diaz) fictional home, where Brit Iris (Kate Winslet) spends her holiday vacation in the beloved— some might say modern Christmas classic—2006 romantic comedy about home swapping (and hilarity and hijinx ensue…).
But the real beauty is in the Italianate-inspired interiors, which are decidedly more traditional than the uber luxe and modern (hellooo, top-tier sound systems and blackout curtains) style of film executive Amanda’s character—sets all designed by Nancy Meyers. In real life, the “landmark two-story masterpiece”, designed by award-winning architect Wallace Neff in 1928 as his own residence, is a private and gated home at 1883 Orlando Road in San Marino that’s considered a “significant contribution to Southern California architecture,” according to the listing with Compass agents Brent and Linda Change.
Once inside the front gates, there’s that iconic motor court driveway and fountain from The Holiday—as well as the bougainvillea-covered loggia balcony and finely crafted wood front door through which Amanda (Diaz) breaks up with Ethan (Edward Burns), and from where Iris (Winslet) welcomes in both the “meet cute” love of Miles (Jack Black) and the paternal/platonic love of Arthur (Eli Wallach).
Around the back, there’s that rear yard with its tiled fresco and fountain, pool and spa—in which Iris teaches Arthur to walk again, before his lifetime achievement award ceremony—plus a paddle tennis court, a basketball court, a BBQ area, a formal rose garden, and a guest area with separate staircase.
But inside the seven bedroom, six bathroom estate are fine features we never see on film, according to the Compass listing: a handsome library with corner fireplace and carved wood ceiling directly off the entrance hall; a grand and gracious staircase; a spectacular living room with coved ceilings, impressive chandelier, iron wall sconces, oversized fireplace, and “walk-in” bar; a formal dining room through carved wood double doors, both overlooking the inner courtyard and opening onto a private side garden; and an adjacent and spacious kitchen with hand-painted tile countertops, abundant storage, center island, and breakfast area; a hallway leading to two bedrooms and bath that opens to an inviting family room with a large fireplace, built-in bookcases, and French doors that then opens onto pool and rear gardens; and a large media/game room down a staircase on the lower level.
There is a chance, however, that this memorable scene from The Holiday—where Iris and Miles get down to the true reason we fall for the wrong people—was actually shot in the living room.
