Why You Should Get This Adorable Gem the Next Time You’re at the Thrift Store
As soon as the seasons start changing, I head to my favorite thrift store to find discounted festive candles, pillows, and decor — and scout unlikely pieces to replicate this year’s most viral holiday DIY projects. I rely heavily on Instagram and TikTok during the fall and winter, and this year I’ve found the perfect hack that uses frosted glass globes to create the most adorable ghosts.
Why You Should Pick Up Frosted Glass Globes at the Thrift Store
In a Reel shared by @stoneycovefarm, the creator showed how she transformed an old-fashioned glass globe (a common find at any thrift or hardware store) into a wee, lit-up ghost — and this extremely easy DIY has a big payoff.
How To Make a DIY Glass Globe Ghost
In the video, the creator used a milky-white frosted glass globe with a fluted, flared opening, but you can also use an old glass lamp shade or a bowl that has a similar shape and color (the more intricate, the better!). All you have to do is turn your globe upside down so the opening is at the bottom, draw on eyes and an open mouth with black permanent marker, and you’ve got a ghost you can put anywhere in your home.
The Instagram creator went one step further by making a tiny black wizard’s hat for the ghost, as well as adding a battery-operated tealight underneath it to make it glow without the fire hazard risks. You can put this little ghost on your fireplace mantel, TV console, or even by the sink in the bathroom. It can go anywhere you want to add a little spooky spirit ahead of Halloween. You could also get a tealight that comes with a timer to create a little night-light display in your home.
Where to Buy Frosted Glass Globes
If you’re struggling to find a glass globe at the thrift store (the creator’s video has since gone viral, and many followers are trying this easy DIY), The Home Depot is selling a similar frosted glass pendant lamp shade for just $5.97. The best part is that this DIY project is almost impossible to mess up, so have fun sourcing your lamp shade-turned-ghost or create a centerpiece with a group of these shining apparitions.
