I Finally Found a Small-Space-Friendly, Matching Furniture Set Brand You’ll Actually Want in Your Home
Matching bedroom furniture sets — and furniture sets in general — have gotten a bad rap for being stuck in the past. I don’t want to yuck anyone’s yum, though, because I know why matching bedroom furniture sets appeal to shoppers: It’s hard to pull disparate pieces together for an artful, eclectic look that still feels visually coherent. This is especially true when it comes to mixing wood finishes because too many can send a space into overwhelming territory. That’s exactly why I’ve fallen in love with the brand Thuma.
As a purveyor of real-wood furniture, Thuma’s all about quality and simplicity. The brand has made the idea of matching the finish of your bed to your nightstands — and perhaps even your dresser — look intentional and elegant. That’s probably because the San Francisco-based company focuses on timeless, streamlined silhouettes that are, in many cases, modular and easy to assemble (and reassemble) if need be. The prices aren’t cheap, but this is forever furniture, IMO.
A Brief History of Thuma
Thuma first burst onto the scene with the launch of its first bed, The Classic, which features Japanese joinery and a tool-less assembly. The point of this bed, though, was never about a gimmick. The idea was to bring a beautiful, easy, minimalist, sustainable, real-wood option to the market for people who wanted a better bed-buying (and assembling and even sleeping) experience. Aesthetically, the bed adapts to many different interior styles, and so began Thuma’s story of championing investment pieces that last — and can grow and evolve with you as your own design journey unfolds.
You won’t find a million finish options or product choices with Thuma. Ease is the name of the game here. Wooden pieces generally come in four finishes (walnut, natural, espresso, grey), and category expansions have happened over time, thoughtfully, and with discretion for the amount of product options available.
Thuma’s Latest Offerings
Take, for example, the brand’s Nest Dresser. The unit consists of solid, upcycled wood with soft-close drawers, and it can be configured in a series of ways to fit a variety of spaces. You can stack drawers up to create a tall boy, or put a few units side by side for a more sprawled-out design. You can also remove or add pieces to it down the line, when your storage needs or space changes. Many of Thuma’s more recent additions, from bookshelves to credenzas, follow this modular model that’s perfect for small-space dwellers.
Lately, Thuma has been venturing into upholstered offerings (beds were first here, too) and even a collaboration with Heller on a tabletop line. They now sell mattresses, bedding and bath linens, and rugs as well and have a brick-and-mortar showroom in New York City, where you can see pieces in person. I picked a few of my favorites, though, so you can go straight to what the brand does best and see the latest and greatest.
