I remember the first time I laid eyes on Timothée Chalamet. It was in Greta Gerwig’s 2017 film Lady Bird; I saw it twice in theaters and cried a lot both times. While I loved the movie, I didn’t think too much of the young actor at the time. Now Chalamet is one of the most sought-after actors in the biz, consistently achieving box-office success, critical acclaim, and a devoted fanbase. I saw Marty Supreme last week, and it’s hard to deny Chalamet’s star power.

Chalamet is certainly very busy in Hollywood, which is likely why he decided to leave his lifelong home base of New York City and buy a home in Los Angeles’ Beverly Hills neighborhood in 2022. His home is large and luxurious, and has over-the-top components, but it’s surprisingly sophisticated for a young star.

What Kind of House Does Timothée Chalamet Live In?

After stints in various New York City apartments, the Marty Supreme star purchased an East Coast traditional-style home in Los Angeles for $11 million in May 2022. Previously owned by model Kate Upton and athlete Justin Verlander (as well as musician Kenny G and tennis pro Pete Sampras), the home practically has celebrity in its DNA. This is for reasons more practical than glamorous: “In markets like this, that pattern is less about celebrity lineage and more about a very small pool of homes that truly work for that buyer profile,” explains Rochelle Atlas Maize, award-winning celebrity real estate agent and executive director of the luxury estates division at Nourmand & Associates.

Built in 1976 and spanning about 5,500 square feet, the house has four bedrooms and five bathrooms, plus a living room with a fireplace, family room, dining room, game room with wet bar and wine cellar, and freshly renovated kitchen with “an oversized marble waterfall-edge island and a breakfast nook,” according to Architectural Digest. There’s also a 1.5-acre outdoor space boasting a pool, jacuzzi, lawn, and championship-size tennis court.

The home’s size “is very much in line with what we see for single male buyers,” says Maize. “It is large enough to feel substantial and luxurious, yet still manageable.” And although Chalamet may be a trendsetter, this Beverly Hills home is actually quite classic and is certainly no bachelor pad. “East Coast traditional architecture tends to attract buyers who value timeless design, craftsmanship, and long-term livability over trend-driven aesthetics. Areas such as Beverly Hills … were originally developed with classic estates in mind, so traditional architecture feels natural and appropriate within these settings,” she adds.

The Most Notable Parts of Chalamet’s LA Home

Although there have been some minor renovations, the property Chalamet purchased still largely retains its East Coast traditional-style design aesthetic. This is an example of what Maize calls “a transitional renovation,” aka “preserving the home’s architectural character while modernizing key areas” — in this case, the kitchen. “Many properties built in the 1960s through 1980s have generous proportions and valuable land,” she says, “making them ideal for thoughtful updates rather than full redevelopment. High-end buyers value this balance of warmth and functionality.”

With its French doors, stone fireplace, pitched ceilings, and plentiful large windows, Chalamet’s home is relatively mature and sophisticated, but it has some creative quirks, too. There’s the huge tennis court, of course, although Vogue says the actor put a basketball hoop and ping-pong table in that area, surely due to his documented love of basketball and recent starring role as a table tennis champ. House Beautiful also reports that his living room walls act as a “museum of sorts” for his antique collection, which includes “vases and pottery” displayed in ornate shelving

“Among high-profile and celebrity buyers, it is quite common to dedicate rooms to personal passions,” says Maize. Bill Gates reportedly had a room full of trampolines in his home! “This trend is especially pronounced among creatives and collectors who see their homes as extensions of their personal brand or artistic identity,” Maize adds. It “allow[s] buyers to fully integrate private interests into their environment without compromising the home’s overall functionality.”

Where Did Timothée Chalamet Live Before LA?

Although Chalamet is now an LA homeowner, this is a relatively new change for him. Up until he bought the Beverly Hills house in 2022, he was a New York boy through and through; he rented apartments in the Bronx and Manhattan. He also grew up in Manhattan Plaza, a 46-story Section 8 building in Midtown where 70% of the units are legally required to be subsidized for performing artists in New York City who apply to live there. (It still exists; in fact, an acquaintance of mine just moved there!)

In a way, the fact that this NYC actor now owns an LA house with East Coast design means he’ll always have a piece of home with him. “East Coast-inspired homes offer something increasingly rare in the Los Angeles market: a sense of permanence, warmth, and enduring appeal,” says Maize. And isn’t that what we hope from Chalamet, as well?
