This Whimsical Boho Caravan Is a Wes Anderson Meets Oregon Trail Fantasy

A little bit Wes Anderson, a little bit California Boho and a little bit traveling fortune teller, this caravan is wholly unique.

Musician/photographer/designer Steve Areen built the Unity Wagon by hand and by using almost all recycled materials. Two of Steve’s friends own a farm outside of Melbourne and invited him to hang out as their “artist in residence.”

“I decided to make my own version of a covered wagon, with a pulley system that made it easy to roll the canvas all the way up and a strap that pulls it down back down. I had never seen this done before, but it sure worked well in my head.” Steve told Inhabitat. The gorgeous wood structure is inviting and functional, letting the outdoors in but keeping unwelcome critters (snakes, we’re talking about those scary Australian snakes) out.

The wee little caravan is built to expand when guests come around. The sliding base of the bed pulls out to create extra sleeping space with the help of a few cushions. A table expands to seat up to seven folks and should the party get even larger, the roof of the caravan opens up for climbing, chilling and having heart to hearts under the open sky.

Steve isn’t a stranger to unique spaces, having previously lived in a dome home in Thailand. You can see more of the Unity Wagon as well as Steve’s other structures here.
