It’s one of my goals this summer to go to the beach more often. I live in New York City, and it’s easy to forget that the beach is just a train (or ferry) ride away. I don’t want to waste any time, so I need to get my gear in order soon. And as a beach-going novice I’m pretty much starting from scratch, so my wish list is long. It includes a beach tent, an umbrella, and a cute towel. In the number-one spot, however, is a beach chair.

There’s no question that it’s a must-have. I might not be that experienced with the beach, but I’m not about to lay down on a towel the entire time and get sand everywhere. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Tommy Bahama’s beach chairs, so I figured that was a solid place to start my search. I quickly realized that they aren’t really in my price range — I’m not that committed to the beach yet — but then I spotted some at Marshalls for only $50.

What Is the Tommy Bahama High Back Chair?

I found an almost identical Tommy Bahama chair for $83, and aside from its print it offers nearly all of the same benefits. The High Back has every feature I could ever want in a beach chair: a rust-proof, collapsible frame that supports up to 250 pounds; a cup holder; and a padded shoulder strap for transport. The attached zippered pouch is an unexpected bonus — it’s bound to come in handy when I want to keep my phone and sunnies sand-free and accessible.

And don’t even get me started on how cute it is! I want my beach day to be picture-perfect, and the teal color, wooden arms, and subtle floral print definitely fit the bill. However, if that hue isn’t up your alley, you’re in luck: Marshalls is also selling the same chair in a gradient stripe pattern. (I’m already imagining the photo ops.)

While the Apartment Therapy team hasn’t tested this exact version of the Tommy Bahama beach chair, one of our contributors has tried the mega-popular Backpack model. “For starters, this chair is super comfortable,” writer Remi Rosmarin says. The “padded backpack straps [make] for easy carrying, and at just about eight pounds the chair feels pretty light when strapped to your back, too.”

Although the High Back Chair doesn’t have quite as many bells and whistles, I’m willing to bet it delivers plenty of comfort and portability. And it’ll save you a chunk of change. Just make sure to grab one before other shoppers catch on, because once they do I’m sure these chairs will be gone before summer arrives.
