I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

As I’ve developed my sense of style I’ve realized that, more often than not, I gravitate towards furniture pieces with a lived-in, vintage feel. However, it’s not often that I come across antique furniture that I can actually afford and that fits in my space (whenever I got a secondhand couch, I had to call a couch doctor). So when I spot inexpensive pieces that look like family heirlooms passed down, I’m intrigued.

Walmart understands that need and is selling a vintage-looking, almost Moroccan-inspired headboard that looks like it should sell for three times its listed price.

What Makes Walmart’s Rattan Headboard So Special?

I first spotted Walmart’s Baxton Studio Headboard in Priya Gopi’s bedroom in her Art Deco-style Brooklyn rental. Immediately I assumed that it was either expensive or a family heirloom (or both!) because of the intricate detailing and, what looked like, real wood. However, I soon realized that a full-size version of this headboard costs under $200.

The headboard is crafted from synthetic rattan, but it easily could’ve fooled me. The material, especially complemented by the rubberwood in an ash walnut finish, adds depth and texture to the room without being overwhelming and still sticking to a warm, neutral color scheme. (It’s no wonder Apartment Therapy pulled together a roundup of fan-favorite rattan headboards.)

In Priya’s apartment, the bed is actually situated in what used to be a small study. Given the limited footprint, the headboard (which is less than an inch thick) — rather than having a full bedframe — adds visual intrigue without cluttering up the space or making it feel cramped. Also, New York City apartments often have many flights of stairs, but this headboard is just over 20 pounds, which means it shouldn’t be too difficult to carry it up a few flights.

If you’re looking for a headboard that looks like it’s from the past but without the wear, consider Walmart’s Baxton Studio Headboard. Additionally, fans of this style should check out the rest of Priya’s full House Tour to see more of her gorgeous home.
