We Used Our New “Room Plan” Tool to Give This Living Room 3 Distinct Styles — See How, Then Try It Yourself
Even if you know your style, there are still so many options for arranging your space. From furniture to decor to color to layout, the variables are practically endless. They are also slightly frustrating and sweaty, as we shove couches from one end of the room to the other.
That’s why we created Room Plan: This intuitive tool, presented in partnership with Walmart, turns any room into a 3D puzzle of possibilities. Here’s how it works!
- Use one of our default room photos to get started or upload your own.
- Let Room Plan magically erase its contents so you can start designing from scratch.
- Choose from the latest on-trend furnishings from Walmart, from rugs to tableware, and create the look you love.
- Shop your design!
I tried it out on this large, open living room. With so much space, it could take a lot of different looks. A perfect challenge for Room Plan! See how I gave it three distinct looks — without lifting a single item.
Option 1: Neutral With a Pop of Color
For this one, I decided to stick with a palette of light neutrals that complemented the existing color scheme. To add visual interest, I played with textures and subtle patterns, like an area rug inspired by mineral deposits and throw pillows in a warm honeycomb pattern. A sideboard in honey wood tones, plus a pop of greenery, rounded things out.
I knew I wanted to add plenty of comfortable seating to this big room. I played with a variety of couch sizes and shapes before settling on two matching sofas, set at an angle, in a sandy shade. I liked the openness they created. At the kitchen island, I chose backless stools that would allow for easy conversation in all directions. A deep burgundy swivel chair in an organic, soft shape added a pop of subdued color.
Option 2: Organic Modern
Next, I wanted to try adding layers of warmth and softness to this big room. I’ve always wanted to try layering area rugs, like the large jute base rug and bright teal area rug seen here — Room Plan made it easy to experiment!
For seating, I wanted soft, cozy pieces that also carried the rug’s colors: This navy blue arm chair and emerald green sectional worked beautifully. I added an organically textured ottoman and a standing lamp in a warm brass tone, to create a fireside reading nook. Nearby, a pair of pillowy leather loungers created a conversation corner. It’s still an open layout, but easy to be distinct mini rooms too — I like how inviting both options feel.
Option 3: Subtle and Sophisticated
Finally, I wanted to inject this big space with just a little bit of drama. This rich faux leather sofa with nail head trim made a classic statement piece. An angular midcentury faux leather arm chair and sleek black side table turned the area into a sophisticated style vignette. I liked how all the rich browns and blacks — like the geometric diamond area rug and the handcrafted wood tables with hairpin legs — created a moody, cozy elegance.
Across the room, a slim sideboard could hold everything from bar necessities to board games — plus its warm wood hue echoed the coffee tables. A mix of art prints and open shelving added depth and interest to the wall area. Finally, I leaned a large piece of art against the mantel, where it could pop under the track lighting.
Using Room Plan let me see all three options accurately — right down to mirror reflections and shadows! The tool helped me visualize my ideas quickly, tweak them easily, and create a reliable layout that wouldn’t surprise me in real life. It also gave me a stronger sense of a room’s scale, so I could choose furniture accordingly, and let me experiment with styles that I don’t usually gravitate toward. And? It’s just really fun to use.
