Walking into your bedroom should bring you comfort. Unlike a kitchenette, living room, or patio, your bedroom is a place just for you (and your partner and/or pets, if applicable). You don’t need to worry about impressing guests with sophisticated wall art or trendy new furniture; your bedroom should look as unique or simple as you want it to be. However, you do still need to furnish it, which can be like playing a game of Jenga, especially if you’re dealing with a small living space like me.

It may seem counterintuitive to say furnishing a small space takes extra time, but it often requires more creativity to fit the essentials like a bed, dresser, and nightstand into a smaller bedroom while still incorporating fun decorative elements and a few extras, because a modest room doesn’t mean you have to be a minimalist. That’s why I turned to Tiffany Fasone, home stager and CEO of Philadelphia-based Voila Design Home, for her tips on making a cramped bedroom stylish and functional using only items from West Elm.

Claremont Round Nightstand
$299

Just because your bedroom is on the cozier side doesn’t mean you have to ditch any of the essentials. Fasone calls this sleek cylindrical nightstand a “compact classic,” and recommends the lighter blonde wood because “the light tone makes a room feel airy and open.” Standing 20 inches tall with a 15-inch diameter, it “fits beside even the smallest bed without feeling bulky.” Plus, it has two forms of storage: a drawer up top and a shelf down below.

Solstice Painted Raffia Vanity
$999

The word “vanity” may sound frivolous, but a nice vanity can add both form and function to your room, no matter the size. This “coastal-inspired vanity,” Fasone says, “blends organic warmth with modern polish” and is “perfect for layered, collected spaces.” There’s a large built-in mirror and a drawer that spans over 30 inches wide. “The narrow design and integrated storage give function without taking up visual weight,” she adds.

Lara Floating Nightstand
$249

It’s nice to have a nightstand on either side of your bed, especially if you share it with someone, but that doesn’t mean they have to match. Like the Claremont nightstand, this one is wooden with a clean, curved design, but you mount it to the wall instead of setting it on the ground, giving it a “floating” appearance and creating floor space out of thin air. “The wood tone adds warmth while the design feels fresh and contemporary,” Fasone explains, while the shelf-like design “keeps the floor clear and the look sleek.”

Mid-Century 5-Drawer Dresser
$1,299$1,199

Small rooms are kind of like big cities, in that they both benefit from making good use of vertical space. This tall 5-drawer dresser “maximizes storage without spreading out horizontally,” says Fasone — the raised legs even let you store items underneath. It’s also quite pleasing to the eye. “The warm acorn finish and tapered legs bring a mid-century charm that works anywhere,” she adds.

Penn Bench
$299

With its “soft texture and modern lines,” Fasone calls this bench “the perfect mix of comfort and sophistication, great at the foot of a bed or under a window.” A bench may not seem like a crucial bedroom addition if you’re lacking space, but Fasone points out that in addition to providing extra seating, it “doubles as a statement piece and extra storage spot if paired with baskets underneath.”

Freya Flange Headboard
$399

Even small spaces can make a statement. One effective way to do that is with a striking headboard, since it doesn’t take up much space aside from the section of wall right above your bed. This “elegant, upholstered headboard … adds polish without fuss,” says Fasone, and “the alabaster linen gives a calm, elevated feel that pairs with any bedding.” It’s available in sizes ranging from twin to California King, so you’ve got options.
