The Holy Grail Winter Product That Stands Up to Snow, Rain, and Sleet (I Use It Every Day)
During a recent trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, I quickly learned that both locals and visitors take their gear seriously. There is a good reason for that. Having the right gear in the park, the mountains, or on the slopes can mean the difference between having a grand adventure and a day spent struggling and being uncomfortable.
During my trip, I saw a distinctive backpack a few times. Upon closer look, I was surprised to see the brand behind it was YETI, which is better known for its water bottles and coolers. I finally stopped someone to ask about the unique-looking backpack, and he told me it was a YETI Cayo, so as soon as I got home I ordered one for myself. After using it several times, I’ve realized just how versatile it is for both everyday use and adventures.
What Is the YETI Cayo Backpack?
The YETI Cayo is a water-resistant backpack that comes in three sizes — 15 liters, 25 liters, and 35 liters — and two color choices (black or olive, which is what I went with), and it’s “all-weather” rated, which means it can withstand almost any climate. It also has removable waist and chest straps which are great if you intend on using the backpack for a strenuous hike or camping.
The Cayo has several pockets, including one that is the perfect size for my YETI water bottle, and a small exterior pocket up top that is just the right size for my phone and other small items such as my sunglasses and keys. There are several interior pockets, so it’s easy to stay organized when using this backpack.
Why I Love the YETI Cayo Backpack
The straps on the top and sides make it easy to grab. Even better, the backpack’s zippers open nearly all the way to the bottom. That makes it easier to access anything I need quickly, even if it’s fallen to the bottom of the bag. No more rummaging around my bag without knowing what I’m grabbing!
Although I haven’t used the Cayo for travel yet, this feature alone makes it a great contender for a carry-on. The Cayo is comfortable, too. It has a padded back and padded straps.
I live in Washington, DC, where we get a lot of rain — sometimes torrential — and snow. The Cayo has kept all of my belongings completely dry in every condition. As a mom of four, I also often take my kids to places like playgrounds and pools, where my backpack usually gets tossed on the ground. The Cayo is perfect for times I find myself sitting near the edge of a sandbox, tossing my backpack down in a pile of mulch next to the swings, or leaving my bag near the edge of a pool. I’ve even brought my Cayo to the beach and found that it’s a great alternative to a traditional beach bag. I love that it’s so easy to wipe off the Cayo when I get home, and it looks practically brand-new.
Although the Cayo is water–resistant, YETI notes that it’s not completely submersible. That’s fine for most people. However, the brand does make a completely submersible backpack, the Panga. The Panga looks almost identical to the Cayo and is available in more colors. However, it’s more expensive and lacks some of the organizational pockets that help make the Cayo such a great backpack. Still, the Panga is a good option for those worried about getting caught in a soaking storm or hiking through deeper waters, or who want the best protection in case they capsize in a kayak or canoe. I’ll take my chances on a long city walk with my kids!
