Helena’s “Laura Ingalls meets Pottery Barn” Cabin
Name: Helena Location: Springhill — Belgrade, Montana After almost 5 months of moving around, I finally wanted to create a space all my own. Having a “cabin in the woods” has long been a dream of mine (does anyone NOT have this dream?), I was so excited to fill it (but not too much, you know, because minimalism and such…) with things that I loved, or reminded me of people or places that were important to me.

Easy Tricks to Make Any Wall Art Feel Bigger & Bolder
Sometimes you fall in love with a piece of art, envision it in a certain perfect spot in your home…and are totally disappointed when it turns out to be too small. Don’t find another place for it just yet! There are four easy ways you can make a too-small piece of art seems bigger and bolder. Like the example above, using items like thick, textured rope or ribbon to “hang” the art can make it feel a lot more substantial than the actual pieces are.

Shopper’s Guide: Where to Buy Really, Really Big Vases
Recently I wrote about a big, beautiful new trend for the home: blooms and branches displayed in big, oversized vases. Many of you loved the look, but wanted to know: where does one find a vase this big? So I’ve rounded up a few options. A few things I was looking for: vases made of clear glass (minimal, works with any decor, shows off flowers well), and that measured 12 inches or more in at least one dimension.

Before & After: New Life for a Crumbling Clinton Hill Bathroom
While not lacking in a certain crumbly charm, the bathroom in Colin and Orli’s Crown Heights co-op was definitely not a place where you would want to take a bath. Five different layers of floor tiles, installed on top of each other over the years, made for an unsettling drop when stepping into the tub. The subway tile walls were starting to look far too much like an actual subway for comfort, and thanks to many decades of water damage, the whole thing was falling apart.

Before & After: Marissa and Justin Get a Grown-Up Outdoor Room
Marissa and Justin moved into their home two years ago, but never really figured out how to furnish their outdoor space. They use their deck and yard all the time, especially for entertaining, but Marissa doesn’t feel like the camping chairs and odds and ends laying around (um, there seems to be a puppet??) make for a particularly inviting space.

Style Boosts: Ideas for Upgrading a Simple Kitchen Sink Window
Windows over sinks tend to draw the eye, which means that this small area in your kitchen has a lot of visual responsibility. Taking some time to dress it up — even a little bit — can change the entire look and feel of the room, and reward you tenfold. Erin of Francoise et Moi painted the window frame a pretty blue to make it stand out, and topped it off with brass hardware.

Melody’s Updated and Expanded Salt Lake City Duplex
Name: Melody Location: Salt Lake City, Utah Thanks to Apartment Therapy we had plenty of ideas when we remodeled our downtown 1906 SLC duplex five years ago. Utah is not known for its style, so we ended up doing most everything ourselves (since most contractors couldn’t understand our aesthetic). The renovation took us two years, lots of heartache, and endless DIY thinking.

Before & After: Living Room Walls Go from Faux Finish Stucco to Stylish Shiplap
Project by: Adam Bechtold of Adam Bechtold Interiors Location: Great Falls, Virginia Though the room above could certainly fit the tastes of plenty of people, to the young couple who bought this 1970s colonial-style house (their first home), it didn’t fit their style (and felt rather dated to them). So they enlisted the help of Adam Bechtold to take this room from traditional style to something more cozy and nature-filled.

Before & After: Out of the ’70s For Under $200
Not all wallpaper is created equal. And while it is having a well deserved moment, some wallpaper can make a room feel instantly dark and outdated. Yasmin found an inexpensive way to banish her bland wallpaper, among other things, and brighten up her whole kitchen. From Yasmin: When we got this home, we definitely loved the original 70s homey feel to it, the original owners were so kind as to even leave us some orchids in the kitchen!

Tuva & Lars’ Super Sunny Norwegian Apartment
Name: Tuva & Lars Location: Tøyen — Oslo, Norway What we love most about our apartment, and one of the main reasons we bought it four years ago, is the light. It’s a third floor south-west facing apartment with windows on three sides. Lots of windows. And lots of light throughout the day. It makes the apartment feel airy and fresh.

Before & After: Two Tiny Closets Get a Super-Functional Update
The master bedroom of Nikkia and Daniel’s two-bedroom apartment had an especially perplexing and inefficient closet situation: two tiny closets side by side, each with a single shelf and hanging rail, and a tiny door that made accessing the closet’s contents a challenge. So as part of their apartment renovation (which included a very smart kitchen update), they combined the two tiny, poorly designed closets into one big, super-efficient one.

Before & After: What is Change Really?
Who among us hasn’t spotted that rare garage sale find full of potential and charm, only to look at it and sigh, “What’s the point, anyway? Time is endless yet fleeting.” Charles did exactly that and the results are pretty breathtaking. From Charles: I was looking to add a little mid cent mod flair to my living room. So I spent countless hours scouring the internet to fill the void, and to no avail.

Margaret can thank her mom for insisting she join her for some live country music and two-steppin’ on that fated Friday night when she met Gabe at Blanco’s. While Emily’s kitchen certainly wasn’t in the worst shape visually of some of our submissions, I became much more invested in this transformation (and wept for the state of her baked goods) when I found out she was using a 50 year old oven. From Emily: Our kitchen was original from 1965, and after living with it for two years we decided it was time to renovate – I’d been using the original stove and oven!

Kevin’s hallway update is an excellent blend of style and function and a testament to really thinking about how the furniture is serving the space when making design choices. Before & After: Bold Bathroom Color Choices
Our 1961 Colonial house on Long Island had orange shag carpeting and some delightful fixtures when we purchased it in 2013. We ended up renovating nearly every room in the house, but it’s taken all this time for me to finish decorating! The room I’m sharing is our powder room. It had a shell shaped sink in the shortest vanity I’ve ever seen when we started. I decided to use the small space to get dramatic with color.

An 85-Year-Old ‘Tiny House’ in the Style of Frank Lloyd Wright
We often talk about tiny houses and small space living as if they’re a new thing, but the truth is that little houses have been around for years (and were, in fact, once the norm for a majority of Americans). Case in point: this 85-year-old home, built by one of his disciples in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose compact 552 square foot floorplan provides plenty of inspiration for the small houses of today.

Violeta’s Vivacious New Look
Name: Violeta Location: County Limerick, Ireland My home was featured on Apartment Therapy six years ago and a lot of new things happened since then in our home and garden. We went crazy in the hallway and painted it all black! I just think hallways are always neglected by people and that’s a big mistake. A pop of color can go a long way. Fresh Ideas for Fixing Funky Features
Sometimes there’s just something in your home that you just can’t change, but also can’t stand the sight of. These fresh ideas could help you hide, disguise or beautify an element in your home you wish you couldn’t see. While the long and narrow piece of storage furniture below the window in this small condo might look like a fancy credenza or storage shelf, it actually has two purposes. It’s a custom-made storage piece that also hides an unsightly radiator!

Before & After: Tearing Down a Wall to Open Up a Kitchen
One thing I love about this upgrade is that you can still see the heart of the original kitchen, it’s just…grown into its looks. Cara made a ton of smart choices to upgrade the look and usability of the space to create a bright and sleek kitchen. From Cara: Before we even put in an offer on our current house, we knew that to make the house fit our needs and gain serious points for resale, the walls separating the closed off kitchen and formal dining room needed to go.

Heloise’s “Ever Changing” D.C. Apartment
Location: U Street Corridor — Washington, D.C. I live up the road from President Obama and my place is almost 1,000 square feet. I decorated on a budget. I started my company while simultaneously moving into a new place, and it really leaves the decorating budget to a minimum. I prefer neutrals such as whites and grays for your bones, i.e. couch and chairs, and then like to add color elsewhere. That way you have more options for trading out pillows and fabrics down the road.

Before & After: Smart Updates for a Generic Kitchen
Here’s a thing that’s bound to happen when you’re house shopping: you see a place where the previous owner has replaced the kitchen (or bathroom), ostensibly as a selling point, but the new kitchen or bathroom already looks incredibly dated. It’s especially frustrating if you really like the place otherwise, because then you find yourself in the position of either living with a kitchen that you really don’t like, or ripping out one that’s brand-new.

Mandi’s Eclectic Fixer Upper

It was that magical combination of a clear vision, a husband who trusted me and a few family members with construction know-how. The house was very willy-wonka (the floors were so sloped it was an experience walking through the house), pink-carpet in the bathroom, brown shag rug in the living area, and a kitchen layout that was so, so awful.

Making Mirrored Walls Modern: Seven Ideas to Steal
Michael Reeves via Dering Hall We all know that mirrors are fantastic for making a space appear larger than it is. It goes like this: available light + reflective surface(s) = much more light = greater sense of space. The problem is that a mirrored wall can sometimes feel vaguely commercial, or even cliche, if the application is off. Here are seven mirrored walls that are anything but, and that pack a big (spatial) punch as well. The lead image is of a Michael Reeves-designed home in London.
