Name: Julie and Michael Martino Location: Doubleview, Western Australia Size: 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms Years lived in: 17 Years; Owned Julie and Michael’s home is truly one-of-a-kind. Designed by a Swiss architect and built by a Polish migrant in the ’90s, it is full of quirky features—all of which Julie has embraced with her beautiful knack for mixing antiques and roadside junk finds with modern, handmade pieces. The result is a home brimming with soul and personality.

Name: Jennifer Location: Newbury Park, California Our home is a 1959 post and beam ranch home (1,143 square feet) on nearly one acre of horse property. We gutted 3/4 of the home, leaving original character such as open beam ceilings. The three bedroom home is now a two bedroom with a large open concept living space that works for us It’s very bright, rustic yet refined and eclectic all at the same time!

Name: Lauren & Breeze Location: The St. Roch Neighborhood — New Orleans, Louisiana It’s not very often that you hear about two friends buying a home together. In fact, most people would warn against the idea. But that’s exactly what my best friend, Breeze, and I did last May. We both were in love with the city of New Orleans. NOLA was pure magic for us. We had talked about buying a home, fixing it up and decorating it together. It was our dream.

Name: Sarah Location: Williamsburg — Brooklyn, New York Hello! I’m a chef and founder of Salt House, and I created the ultimate entertaining space and sanctuary in my small (around 600 square feet) Williamsburg apartment. I work and live in this space, so there’s a big dining room table that me and my team work on during the day and then use for dinner parties in the evenings! We can seat up to 20 people, believe it or not!

Name: Elizabeth Location: Luzern, Switzerland Our home is a 4 bedroom, Swiss loft apartment spread across two floors. It’s a fantastic open space with tons of exposed timber and bright light. Although it’s been very tempting to embrace an entire Alpine lodge feel, our years spent in Indonesia lend a very global touch to the decor.

Name: Katherine Hysmith and Josh Gantt and their cats, Eleanor and Maxwell Location: Belmont, Massachusetts Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 4 years; Rented When Katherine Hysmith, The Boston Globe contributor and founder of the food blog The Young Austinian, left her native Texas to pursue a graduate degree in gastronomy from Boston University, she brought her Southern roots with her.

Names: Alexandra Piotrowski and Max Ostrove Location: Venice, California Size: 576 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years; Rented From the moment you enter Alex and Max’s bright, un-fussy home, it’s evident that every item has a story. The beautiful wood shelving and furniture becomes all the more warm to the touch when you learn that much of it was handcrafted by the inhabitants.

Name: Rachel Location: Clinton Hill — Brooklyn, New York My husband and I moved into this cozy 600 square foot-ish apartment (1 bed/1 bath) nearly 3 years ago. After living with multiple roommates in Bushwick in my early 20s, the apartment initially felt luxuriously spacious…at least in my memory! Fast forward 2 1/2 years later, my appreciation and impression of our apartment is continually evolving.

Name: Heidi Unkefer (left), Brittany Meyer (right) & Jess Manning Location: Wicker Park/East Village; Chicago, Illinois Years lived in: 3 years (Brittany), 1.5 years (Heidi), 0.5 years (Jess) This is no brand-new condo made to look like an industrial space with high ceilings and exposed ducts; this is a paint-on-the-floor, full of history, open and raw, ever-evolving space, one that has changed in size and configuration over the years depending on whomever was living there at the moment.

Name: Kati Location: Rice Village — Houston, Texas One year ago, I packed my cat Boots and everything I owned into a minivan and moved from New York City to Houston, Texas to be with my boyfriend. We rented a great apartment in Rice Village – near a host of boutiques, restaurants, and bars. This was our first time living together, and we were excited to curate an apartment that reflected both of our personalities. We wanted a combination of clean lines and comfort.

Name: Justin and Madison Power and their schnoodle, Sylvia Location: Roslindale; Boston, Massachusetts Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 3 Months; Rented Justin Power of Pioneer Goods Co. has a bent for good old rustic Americana. The son of an interior designer, Justin spent a great deal of his childhood developing his eye at flea markets and estate sales with his mother. Some twenty years later, Justin curates his own home goods shop in one of Boston’s most popular neighborhoods.

Name: Hana Location: Crown Heights — Brooklyn, New York As an interior designer, there’s always a bit of anxiety as to how to decorate my home. My husband and I recently moved to Crown Heights from a Park Slope duplex. The main reason we were looking to move is because I was starting my business and planning to work from home, like my husband. We needed a home with enough rooms to house both of our work spaces.

Name: Amandine Isnard & Mihalis Gripiotis and Aristos Location: Williamsburg; Brooklyn, NY Size: 2,800 square feet Years lived in: 7 years; Rented Amandine is the Head of Product Development for Eve Lom, a European niche luxury beauty brand, and Mihalis is a journalist and the founder of the art-house film production company IFFI Productions. Their Brooklyn house was decorated to look like a film set, and as a result, has been used as a studio for various film projects.

Name: Emily and Zack Location: Fishtown —Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Back in June, my husband Zack and I made an unexpected decision: we left our two-bedroom apartment in the posh Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of downtown Philadelphia to call a one-bedroom Fishtown flat home. We weren’t planning on moving when our previous landlord approached us about renewing our lease for a third year. But as it goes, one conversation led to another, and we began itching for a new experience.

Name: Pierce Atkinson Location: St. Henri; Montréal, Canada Size: Approximately 900 square feet Years lived in: Almost 2 years; Rented Pierce is someone who is not afraid to take risks in life, especially when it comes to style and design. Following the best design advice he’s ever received—decorate for “You Do You”—Pierce has filled his apartment with what he is attracted to the most: color, patterns, and quirk.

Name: Kersten & Kim McFarland and their children, Christian and Grace Location: Maylands, Western Australia Size: 170 square meters (1,830 square feet) Years lived in: Two years; Owned When Kim and Kersten first stumbled upon their 1950s cottage, they could see its potential right away. The location was enviable, boasting both a nearby river and views of the city, and they knew with some careful planning, they could turn the small, dark house into the light, bright family home that it is today.

Name: Allie & Travis Hackett-Camacho and their dog, Brody Location: Lynn-Highland Park; Oakland, CA Size: 1,300 square feet Years lived in: 3.5 years; Rented Allie may look familiar to Apartment Therapy readers, as her twin sister Caitlin’s home—Caitlin & Dave’s Oakland Apartment of Wonder & Oddities—was recently featured.

Name: Shena Troia & George Peake Location: Marigny; New Orleans, Louisiana Size: 2,200 square feet Years lived in: 1 year; Owned Just three years ago, Shena and George’s New Orleans home was the embodiment of urban blight. The house, built in 1850 as guest quarters for the Masonic Lodge next door, was on the city’s list of neglected properties slated for demolition. Graffiti covered the exterior walls, weeds were growing out of the roof, and all but two sets of doors were missing.

Name: Miranda Lake Location: Uptown — New Orleans, Louisiana Size: 2,400 square feet including the studio Years lived in: 15 years; owned Stepping onto the grounds of Miranda Lake’s New Orleans home feels like being transported into the whimsical world she depicts in her artwork.

Name: Savannah, Mike, Finn the cat and Nori the 3-legged Pit bull Location: Verdun, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Our apartment is on the ground floor of a triplex in the ever-evolving neighbourhood of Verdun. We probably visited about 30 apartments in the area before falling in love with this one. We were looking for a place that was pretty spacious because we both work from home and would be spending the majority of our time in the space.

Name: Jen & Dave Figueroa and their two rescue greyhounds, Ike and Louise Location: Austin, Texas Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: 1 year; Owned A little over a year ago, Jen and Dave bought a house that was in desperate need of some love. The house sits on a cul-de-sac in a neighborhood in South Austin, and when they bought it, it had old carpet, beige walls, and all the hallmarks of a fixer-upper.

Name: Alexandra and Aaron, Hank the dog and Ben the cat Location: Slidell, Louisiana When I got a job as a meteorologist at a New Orleans television station, I was thrilled to move home to the vibrant and unique city where I grew up. Shortly after, my soon-to-be husband joined me from his hometown in Texas. He’s more of a small-town person and preferred to live a little removed from the city.
