I never thought I would own a deep sofa. As someone who tests dozens of couches monthly for AT’s Personal Shopper series, I’m exposed to lots of different silhouettes, and I always figured that I’d end up with a medium-deep model in my own apartment. After all, having a “Goldilocks” couch enables you to do everything from the same spot, whether that’s lounging, reading, working, or eating.

But when I found myself having to make that decision, I opted for a small but deep sofa that initially attracted me with its clean lines and performance velvet upholstery. After owning it for nearly a year, I can say the comfort of being able to recline all the way while watching movies is unmatched, and I couldn’t imagine having an upright sofa.

In any case, deep sofas have been trending for the past couple of years, so if you’re curious, I have some recommendations to share with you. Below are my 10 favorite deep sofas I’ve tested in-store. No matter which one you choose, I guarantee you’ll have a hard time leaving your seat.

Holt Sofa
$2,613$1,829

Not only is Joyird’s Holt sofa perfect for small spaces, but like the rest of the retailer’s living room seating, it’s also highly customizable. The Holt is available in countless colorful upholstery fabrics, and despite being only 86 inches long, it offers plenty of space to stretch out thanks to its recessed backs. Wide square arms complete the look and serve as a convenient resting place for your phone.

Big Sur Square Arm Upholstered Sofa Chaise Sectional
$4,398$3,518

For the best lounging experience ever, grab a blanket, and sprawl out on the double-wide Big Sur sectional. It’s ideal for large families or entertaining, but you’re not sacrificing style for comfort. The sofa excited me with its plush foam cushions and contemporary design. This piece proves you really can have it all.

Harmony Sofa
$2,099$1,679

West Elm’s Harmony model is the sofa I own, so you won’t be surprised to learn that it’s my favorite. Although it’s available as an extra deep couch, the regular version is already so deep, my 5-foot-tall roommate’s legs dangle if she reclines all the way back on it. The Harmony is also supremely comfortable and has bouncy, supportive seats. I’ve had a few friends sleep on it overnight, and they all agreed it felt just like sleeping on a real bed.

Emilia Leather Modular Sectional
$5,500

Who doesn’t love a good modular couch? Ashley’s Emilia sectional is not only one of the best reconfigurable models I’ve tested, but it’s also one of the best leather models. Each seat is both deep and plush, and it’s a good thing there are plenty of them, so no one ever has to fight over the best spot.

Mambo Sofa
$2,979$1,787

One of Burrow’s newer releases, the Mambo has a low profile, which is the norm for most deep sofas. This makes it look sleek and futuristic, but those with mobility concerns might want something higher off the ground. Its oversized frame is made up of firm but expansive blocklike cushions, which provide plenty of lounging space. The back cushions also offer lumbar support, and you have the choice between low, square arms or high, curved arms that double as side pillows.

Faible 4-Piece L-Shaped Sectional Sofa
$4,896$4,161

Most of CB2’s sofas have deep seats, but the Faible sectional stood out to me because it’s exceptionally oversized. So, if you have a lot of space to fill, consider this streamlined pick your best bet. Its seats have a spongy, supportive feel, and the double-wide arms don’t hurt, either. This is another fantastic option for big families because it comes in performance fabrics.

Sebastian Daybed
$3,875

Technically, Joybird’s Sebastian model is a daybed, so one would expect its seats to be deep. But I sat in a double-sectional version with two chaises, which made me feel like I was in a luxurious movie theater. I adored the enveloping barrel back and included lumbar cushions, as well as the fact that the daybed is still compact enough for small living rooms despite its roomy chaises. The rounded edges make this a safe pick for families with young kids, too.

Esker 98" Sofa
$2,595

Much like the aforementioned Holt sofa, Blu Dot’s Esker sofa stuns with its simple but luxe silhouette. I noted in my initial review that its arms are wide enough to double as side tables, so if you like to eat or read from your couch, this option is great. Additionally, the sofa’s Kelso fabric has a delightful, bouclé-like texture that still manages to be low-maintenance enough for everyday use.

Rodez 88" Saddle Leather Apartment Sofa
$3,799$3,039

The Rodez sofa is so chic and sexy; if I had an industrial-style loft to furnish, this would be my first choice for seating. It has a pretty low profile and deep bench seat, but its leather is soft to the touch. And how great is it that the Rodez comes in an apartment size? If you’re after your first “grown-up” couch, make it this one.

Lindyn 5-Piece Modular Sectional
$3,200$2,800

Ashley’s Lindyn sectional is something I could picture in a rich Midwesterner’s finished basement. Its jumbo-ribbed upholstery looks kind of retro and adds a touch of playfulness to the rest of the movie room setup. The seats are both very deep and very wide, so you could sit cross-legged and still not bump knees with the person on the seat next to you. What’s more, the Lindyn comes with a heap of matching throw pillows that only add to your comfort.
