A rug is placed underneath a dining table making the space feel more composed

The cool thing about writing AT’s Personal Shopper series is that I get exposed to so many different styles of furniture and home decor. I know what I like, but every once in a while, I see an industrial-style coffee table or traditional sofa that I’m surprised to find myself drawn to. Every retailer has a distinct design profile, but there are still a handful of styles you can spot anywhere, regardless of whether you’re shopping at Pottery Barn or Ashley.

If you’re a fan of mid-century modern design, you’re probably the luckiest type of shopper because there’s so much to choose from no matter where you’re browsing. Below, I’ve rounded up the best mid-century furniture pieces I’ve tested during my visits to Burrow, Blu Dot, and other stores, ranging across a variety of categories. You won’t be surprised to find that there are a lot of West Elm picks — that is the mid-century mecca, after all. Have a look, and who knows? You might just find your dream bed frame or accent chair.

Geo 84'' Velvet Sofa
$1,350$1,049

Deputy Commerce Editor Alicia actually tested the Geo sofa in Wayfair’s physical store, noting that it’s easy to clean, supremely comfortable, and perfect for lazy weekends. If you're feeling bougie on a budget, the Geo is just the fix, specifically in velvet. The sofa manages to look fashion-forward despite its classic design, and its tufted seat cushions will instantly add a dose of glamour to your surroundings.

Stash Desk
$495

At under 42 inches long, Blu Dot’s Stash Desk is easily one of the most narrow desks I’ve seen IRL, but its smooth surface still gives you enough space to work. Angled front legs meet the back legs to create a triangular base, which sets the desk apart from other styles and gives it that mid-century touch. What’s more, the desk comes in seven finishes.

Gimlet Chair
$799

If you’re in the market for a new accent chair, take a look at the Gimlet, one of Burrow’s most recent launches. It’s available in three fabric colors, including a luxurious ivory bouclé, and offers exceptional lumbar support. The contrast against the dark wood finish is timeless and sure to make a statement in any space, whether it’s a bedroom or your living room.

Oliver Sofa, 72"
$699

There's a reason why the Oliver sofa is a West Elm bestseller. It's clean, sophisticated, and modern with supportive, firm seat cushions, and its splayed legs add that stylish mid-century touch. This sofa is made to last and can fit nearly any room aesthetic. And with a compact profile, it's a great choice for a small space.

Jake Upholstered Low Headboard Bed, Queen
$1,199$959

The Jake bed is highly customizable, with numerous upholstery options available. But its tall metal legs are what give it that mid-century flair, not to mention decent underbed storage space. What’s more, the frame is contract grade, so it’s built to last through many years and many moves. You also get to pick your headboard height and even opt for brass legs if you want.

Maimz Loveseat
$850$750

Although it’s a love seat, this Ashley pick is still big enough to serve as an apartment sofa, and it’s a good leather (or, rather, faux leather) option, especially because its upholstery has a slightly weathered look that adds plenty of charm. I also love the tall arms on this love seat. They make you feel enveloped and add coziness to the otherwise pared-back design.

Mid-Century Expandable Dining Table
$799

Not only does this expandable dining table look nice in a refreshingly unadorned way, it's also made of sustainably sourced wood that's kiln-dried for maximum durability. It seats anywhere from two to six people at a time — in other words, it's impressively versatile! Wide-spaced legs make the table comfortable to sit at no matter how many people are dining.

One Night Stand 80" Sleeper Sofa
$2,795

If you like to entertain, a sleeper sofa is a must. I love Blu Dot’s One Night Stand sofa. With a unique folding design, it effortlessly transforms into a queen-size bed with a quick flip. Not feeling the bright red? It also comes in three neutral shades. And the demure button tufting on the back cushions is so mid-century.

Milo Chair
$900$840

If you were to look up “mid-century” in the dictionary, it wouldn’t be surprising to find a picture of the Milo armchair under the definition. Its track arms, tufted back, and clean lines are emblematic of the era. You also get soft chenille upholstery in your choice of color and plenty of support thanks to the firm cushions.

Mid-Century Art Display Mini Desk
$499

West Elm’s mid-century collection has multiple desk offerings that I covered in my shopping guide, but my personal favorite is the art display mini desk. It’s more glitzy than your average wooden mid-century piece thanks to its sleek glass top and gold-toned legs. Under the desktop, you get an extra surface for laptop and stationery storage. And, this desk hardly takes up any space.

Mirasol Sofa
$1,400

Raymour & Flanigan makes it a point to offer most of its sofas and chairs in easy-care fabrics, and that includes the Mirasol sofa. This mid-century stunner is available in 30 colors, so you can tailor it to your space. We also love this stylish model’s button tufted back cushions and padded arms, which practically double as pillows. Size-wise, it measures 88 inches long, which is a perfect in-between length for most homes.

Series 11 2 Door/2 Drawer Console
$2,895

A lot of mid-century design drew inspiration from futurism, or what is now classified as retrofuturism, and I would say Blu Dot’s Series 11 console falls into that category. Expertly crafted from wood and stainless steel, it sports a paneled veneer design with a pop of silver at the base. As for its unusual drawer pulls, they close quietly and softly, which only adds to the console’s low-key vibe.

Parker 2-Piece Chaise Sectional
$3,648$2,918

The Parker is the perfect sofa if you're looking to transition into your “sophisticated adult” phase of life. It has a refined sensibility thanks to its slim, medium-firm cushions, wide chaise, and mid-century modern wooden legs. You might be reluctant to believe it, but this sofa is also great for napping despite its opulent aesthetic.

Marcio Display Coffee Table
$499

West Elm has a number of mid-century coffee tables, including this pop-up model. But if you’re after something with a more open display, I suggest the Marcio table. This 48-inch pick has a rich walnut base outfitted with a durable tempered glass top. Although it looks like a work of art all on its own, the table would also make a wonderful display case for your favorite decor. Simply add coffee-table books and other trinkets to give it your own flair.
