Shopping for a new mattress might sound intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Once you decide on where you want to buy your mattress, figuring out the rest is all a matter of determining your preferences on firmness and features. That’s why we launched our Personal Shopper series, where our editors go to top retailers and test out all the products in a specific category, taking pictures and detailed notes along the way.

In this installment, we headed to Brooklyn Bedding and tried out three mattresses, including options for hot sleepers and those with back pain. Check out all of our thoughts below and see which mattresses we loved the most.

Why Brooklyn Bedding?

Founded in 1995, Brooklyn Bedding has been around for a lot longer than other direct-to-consumer (DTC) mattress brands. It’s known for its excellent customer service, in-house manufacturing, and competitive pricing, giving it an edge over similar mattress retailers. Brooklyn Bedding offers a nice range of mattress styles, including some nontraditional options like an ultra-firm mattress (suitably called the Plank) and a mattress designed for plus size shoppers. It also has the most impressive size range we’ve seen, with many of its mattresses coming in sizes for RVs, dorms, and other atypical measurements.

In addition to mattresses, Brooklyn Bedding sells pretty much everything else you need to outfit a bed, including cooling sheets, mattress toppers, pillows, and frames. We’ve written about and tested Brooklyn Bedding products for years, including the Aurora Luxe mattress (more on that below!), cooling Tencel sheets, and memory foam pillow. If you’re looking for cooling mattresses and bedding, Brooklyn Bedding has a great selection, with many of its products boasting proprietary cooling technology.

The Criteria

We judged every Brooklyn Bedding mattress based on the following criteria:

  • Feel: Is the mattress firm, soft, or somewhere in between? Does it have extra cushioning? Is it comfortable no matter the sleep position?
  • Support: Does the mattress effectively cradle pressure points? Does it feel comfortable to lie on?
  • Materials: What is the mattress made from? Is it a hybrid mattress? Does it have cooling properties?
  • Safety: Do the materials in the mattress have any certifications?

Why You Should Trust Me as a Tester

Each Brooklyn Bedding mattress in this article was tested by Style Editor Emma Dangel. Emma started out on the marketing & brand partnerships team at Apartment Therapy in 2022, and transitioned over to the editorial team in 2025. She mainly covers decor news, style guides, and shopping tips, and has also worked on Apartment Therapy’s Small/Cool NYC event and the New/Next List

To write this article, Emma traveled to Phoenix to check out Brooklyn Bedding’s mattresses in person. She was able to touch, lie on, and closely examine all of the brand’s offerings, plus got to see exactly what’s in each mattress.

Our Favorite Editor-Tested Mattresses at Brooklyn Bedding

Best Cooling: Aurora Luxe Cooling Mattress

What we love

  • Temperature-regulating cover and foam
  • Three firmness levels
  • Optional pillow top

Good to know

  • Limited edge support
  • Cover is silky, so sheets might move around

Emma’s thoughts: For an all-around great cooling mattress, the Aurora Luxe should be your first choice. Not only does it feature multiple cooling layers, but the hybrid construction ensures better airflow compared with an all-foam mattress.

The main draw is the cool-to-the-touch cover, which is designed to pull heat away from you while you sleep (Brooklyn Bedding calls it a GlacioTex cover). In addition to a layer of responsive memory foam, the Aurora Luxe comes with a Copperflex foam layer that’s infused with temperature-regulating fibers.

This mattress also stands out for coming in three firmness levels, and you can add on a cozy cloud pillow top for an extra fee. I tested the medium with the pillow top, and I definitely found it to be plush — in fact, it was a bit too soft for me, as I typically like something a bit firmer. That’s not really a con, though, since there are so many other customizations to get the feel right.

The only downsides to me were the limited edge support and the slippery, silky cover. (I recommend adding a mattress pad to keep sheets from moving around!) Otherwise, I think this is a fantastic mattress if you’re looking for something cooling and customizable.

Specifications:

  • Type: Foam hybrid
  • Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, split king, short queen, RV king, RV bunk
  • Height: 13.25 inches
  • Firmness: Soft, medium, firm

Most Supportive: CopperFlex Pro Hybrid Mattress

What we love

  • Available in both hybrid and all-foam options
  • Zoned lumbar support for excellent pressure relief
  • Medium-firm feel is sturdy but comfortable

Good to know

  • Only available in one firmness level
  • Not as many size options as other Brooklyn Bedding mattresses

Emma’s thoughts: This is my favorite of the Brooklyn Bedding mattresses! The CopperFlex Pro comes in both memory foam and hybrid options, but I only tested the hybrid model. It has a medium-firm feel that I really loved for its comfort and support, especially when I was lying on my back.

Features include the same Copperflex foam found in the cooling Aurora Luxe mattress, as well as zoned lumbar support and encased coils for excellent motion isolation and pressure relief. I got to see how the zoned foam foam is made and really did feel a difference when I tested it for myself.

In addition, I noticed that this mattress had great edge support (especially compared with the Aurora Luxe) and a sturdy, stable feel across its entire surface. It has the same GlacioTex cooling cover seen on the Aurora Luxe, so it’s temperature-regulating and cooling enough for hot sleepers. (If you are a hot sleeper, I definitely recommend the hybrid version, since coils allow for better airflow than foam.)

The CopperFlex Pro is also surprisingly affordable, costing several hundred dollars less than the Aurora Luxe. Overall, I think it’s a steal considering the support and pressure relief — especially if you struggle with back and joint pain.

Best All-Around: Signature Hybrid Mattress

What we love

  • Three firmness levels
  • Optional cooling pillow top
  • Comes in the largest size range

Good to know

  • Lacks the features of other Brooklyn Bedding mattresses

Emma’s thoughts: The Signature Hybrid is Brooklyn Bedding’s most unfussy, affordable mattress, and I think it’s a great all-around choice for most people. Like the Aurora Luxe, it’s available in three different firmness levels — I tested the medium version and found it to have more of a medium-firm feel (which I appreciated).

There’s also an optional pillow top for extra plushness and pressure relief, which the mattress I saw had. That extra layer is made with temperature-regulating fibers, which makes it a good choice for hot sleepers, as well as those who want some extra contouring.

Although it’s the same price as the CopperFlex Pro, the Signature Hybrid doesn’t come with as many features. For example, it doesn’t have the cooling Copperflex memory foam or the zoned lumbar support, although it does have the 8 inches of individually wrapped coils for good motion isolation and edge support.

Therefore, I would opt for the CopperFlex Pro if you have back and joint pain — but for everyone else who is looking for an affordable and customizable mattress, the Signature Hybrid is a solid pick. Plus, it comes in a huge range of sizes, including atypical options for RVs.
