I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

Butter yellow might’ve been 2024’s most popular color, but it seems to have some serious staying power. I’ve continued to see it in clothing stores, nail polish (as I type this, I’m guilty of having butter yellow-painted nails), and interiors. It looks like this color is happily sticking around, and so I’m sure people will want to continue enjoying it as much as they can.

While you can always purchase butter yellow-colored products, you might want to go full throttle and splash the cozy, yummy color on your walls or cabinets. Understandably, though, painting is more of a commitment — and it’s reasonable to be hesitant about painting your walls in a trendy color. That’s why I pulled together real-life examples of butter yellow in people’s homes, so you can feel the timelessness of it and feel inspired.

Keep reading to see real-life examples of this delicious color in people’s homes.

1. Butter Yellow Is Perfect on Kitchen Cabinets

There are several colors throughout Celia Bernardo’s 100-year-old home in Spain, so it’s reasonable to assume that she carefully considered her paint palette. The butter yellow kitchen cabinets add a softer vibrancy to the space and contrast with the brighter colors in the living room and bedrooms.

2. This Home’s Butter Yellow Walls Feel Like a Warm Hug

“Because I work from home, my environment plays a huge role in keeping me engaged and energized,” Camila Amortegui said of her colorful home in North Carolina. As a creative person, it’s essential that her home keeps her inspired — and I’m sure that the butter yellow walls play a significant role in that.

3. Walk on Sunshine with Butter Yellow Floors

Natasha Landers found a forever home in this fixer-upper in London’s Walthamstow area. She lived with the existing kitchen for 15 years, knowing that the room would need the biggest budget. When it was time to update, she installed bright yellow rubber flooring, which she calls a “real showstopper.”

Louise Snouck Hurgronje owns a 17th-century canal house in Amsterdam. While the home still retains its historical charm, with gorgeous wood trim, she has added a modern touch by painting it with Farrow & Ball’s Babouche (No. 223).

Louise Snouck Hurgronje didn’t only save the buttery yellow color for the wood trim; she also colored the kitchen cabinets in a similar shade (Farrow & Ball’s Citron (No. 74)). Her 17th-century canal house in Amsterdam is full of warmth, thanks to the butter yellow hues.

6. Butter Yellow Complements Several Other Bold Shades

One of the best parts of butter yellow is that it complements a wide range of other shades. Just look at Averie Cole’s mural in her bold Jersey City loft. Benjamin Moore’s Morning Sunshine (2018-50) blends perfectly with Pink Peach (2009-40) and Pink Cherub (2079-60).

9. Stripes Are Such a Playful Way to Include Butter Yellow

10. Butter Yellow Can Be in Wallpaper, Too

Another temporary way to experience the allure of butter yellow is to hang peel-and-stick wallpaper in your home — just like Fija did in her colorful house in the Netherlands. The Summer Gray floral-patterned wallpaper has a butter-yellow color, which is so happy (and pairs well with the other patterns in the room!).

11. Butter Yellow Is Better with Other Yellows

You know how I mentioned earlier that butter yellow pairs well with other shades? Well, that includes other yellows! In the primary bedroom of Dani Nagel and Phillip Butler’s rental apartment, there are several shades of yellow — on the walls, curtains, or even bedding. It’s such a delightful place, thanks to the colors.
