How To Make a Shou Sugi Ban Wall
The reclaimed wood wall has been popular for a while now, and I’ve been wanting to get the look in my garage. I love the earthy hues and honest feel of reclaimed wood, but after realizing the time it would take to scour Craigslist and salvage yards for enough material, I decided to forego that nightmare and instead pursue a DIY approach using a wood-charring method called Shou Sugi Ban.

Before & After: DIY Slab Marble Desk
Marble countertops have become part of the renovation/decor vernacular thanks to TV makeover shows (though a distant second to the ever-popular granite countertop). But despite marble’s beauty, it’s rarely mentioned as a material for DIY projects because of its weight and cost, which makes this custom made midcentury inspired home office project unique… Redditor yourpalthomps combined four materials into his very own handsome midcentury-inspired desk.

Cheap, Easy DIY Decorating Idea: Craft with Painted Fall Leaves
Here’s an easy DIY craft for you: grab some leaves from the backyard, whip out some craft paint or thread, and go to town. Easy DIY Project: Making Your Own Cloth Napkins
I’m not quite ready to go off the grid but I try to be eco in small ways, like turning off the faucet when washing dishes, keeping lights off in rooms I’m not using, and not using paper towels. Using cloth napkins is just one of those things that I’m hooked on. A few stats from Earth911 help put things into perspective: 13 billion pounds of paper towels are used in the U.S. every year.

Colorful Accents: Framed Scarves
I have a bit of an obsession with scarves. I can’t go into a shop without beelining toward the pretty folded squares or colorful looped displays. They’re a year-round wardrobe staple. Though the season for long knitted types will be here before we know it, I’m looking toward the silky square versions for inspiring wall hangings. I’m off to Brimfield for the final antique show of 2013.

Before & After: A Target Lamp Redo
I’ve had this old quirky elephant lamp from Target for several years, and although I loved its silly charm, I felt like it was in need of an update. Using some fabric, and new shade, and some spray paint, I managed to change the look of my old friend. As for the shade, I used an old Urban Outfitters lampshade that I had from another lamp and covered it with sheets of brocade fabric. Read more about that process in this earlier post.

Before & After: Floorboards to Cheese Boards
Brooklyn to West‘s Ariele has done it again. In my opinion, she’s the junkyard, dumpster diving, demo-ed house DIY Queen. This gal finds discarded household materials throughout Brooklyn and transforms them into artistic, thoughtful, and beautiful everyday objects. Most recently, she’s taken floorboards and changed them into cheese boards. Genius? YES!Ariele never ceases to amaze me.

Subtle & Stylish (AKA Actually Livable) Nautical Spaces
If you’re searching for a motif to make your bedroom, bathroom or any other room peaceful and vibrant, turn your eyes to the seas. DIY Home Decor: How To Paint a Faux Concrete Wall Finish
A few years ago I wrote about a distressed glazing technique which has a distressed feel to it, a way we developed to add visual texture to your walls that doesn’t like a stock rag rolling. Here, we take this process one step further. The look is both soft and contemporary, works well in urban environments, and is still livable. It’s unique every time, and in this example we’re emphasizing a linear quality, as if the “concrete” was poured into a wood formwork.
