If your living room isn’t as cozy as you’d like it to feel, then it might actually be because your furniture is leaving too much space in your floor plan. There are many ways to up the cozy factor in any space — but one TikTok user shared a before-and-after of a super-simple hack that totally changed the way her home feels. It’s completely free, makes a huge impact, and takes under five minutes to do.

“Changing everything without changing anything!” Leah Pagel (@byleahclaire) wrote in a recent TikTok caption. “This is your sign to move your couch off the wall and make your living room cozier.”

The Best Place To Put a Sofa in Your Living Room

Pagel’s sectional used to be anchored to the wall in her living room. But by pulling it away and limiting the space between the couch, coffee table, and television, the room feels much more intimate and cozy.

“So powerful and understated!” one person commented on Leah’s post. Another said: “So, so cozy.”

The other added benefit of pulling your couch off the wall is that you get an entirely new space to play with between the back of your couch and the wall it was once up against. This is a great opportunity to play with sofa tables, bookcases, or plant stands, or set up a home office, which is exactly what Leah did with her “new” square footage.

In just about five minutes (or less if you have a helping hand), you can make your living room space cozier by simply moving your couch a few feet forward. It’s possible to create more intimate settings in larger spaces with some expert furniture placement, and floating your furniture is a perfect place to start. Give this hack a try in 2026, and your winter season will definitely feel a lot homier.
