There’s an old adage for gift giving that you may have heard before: Don’t get a hobbyist a gift for their hobby unless you know exactly what it is they need. That’s especially good advice for choosing gifts for plant parents. If you’re not a houseplant lover yourself, it can be tricky to figure out what it is that would be both useful and delightful to them.

Well, I couldn’t ask your plant-loving friends and family members what they each wanted for the holidays, so I did the next best thing: I asked a plant expert and shop owner, Kerbi Howat of Flora Plant Shop and Design in East Nashville, what she’s gifting the plant lovers on her own list.

Howat founded Flora nearly 10 years ago and has cared for thousands of plants since, so she knows exactly what plant enthusiasts appreciate beyond the usual tools and accessories they probably already have. Here are the two standout gift categories she says are perfect for almost any plant parent.

Houseplant Charms and Ornaments

If your pal is a houseplant pro, they probably already have misters, aqua meters, and watering cans they like. What they’re less likely to have, though, is something that celebrates their plant passion. A charm or ornament-style gift shows that you see and appreciate their hobby.

Houseplant Holiday Decoration Kit
$15

One of our favorites is this holiday decor kit for houseplants. It’s perfect for anyone with a small space that can’t fit a full-size Christmas tree, and it can work on many popular plants like ZZ plants, cacti, euphorbia, and Norfolk pines. “I love the holiday decorating kit,” Howat shared. It’s whimsical and can turn any tabletop-size houseplant into a holiday tree.”

Plant Animal Chameleon
$9

If you want to gift your houseplant-loving friends with something they can enjoy all year, Howat recommends books, whimsical plant stakes, plant markers, or unique planters that match their decor. This chameleon-shaped one is perfect for the friends that may visit some outdoor plants.

Twiggy Brass Plant Support
$34

And if you choose a planter, you don’t have to pair it with a plant — you can get a plant support to go with it, fill it with their favorite candy, tea towels, or even a bottle of wine. The goal is to find something practical yet fun — the kind of treat a plant parent might not think to buy for themselves.

DIY Plant Hangers, Wall Art, Terrariums, and Kokedama

Is your plant-loving friend also the crafty type? Consider a plant-themed DIY kit — it’s basically a two-for-one gift since it’s both a fun activity and a decor piece, and there are many options to choose from.

DIY Macrame Plant Hanger Kit
$25

Howat recommends a plant hanger kit, calling it “the perfect kit for anyone looking to unplug and craft.” It’s especially great for friends who’ve already covered every surface of their home in plants — hanging planters let them take their collection vertical. If you know they like vining plants, pair the kit with pothos or philodendron for an extra-thoughtful touch.

Tiny Terrarium Kit
$39

Howat also suggests DIY terrarium kits like this one. She says they’re “a great way to get creative with plants and create your own plant world.” Terrariums come in all kinds of sizes and styles, so it’s easy to find one that suits your friend’s decor and favorite types of plants. If they love succulents or cacti, go for an open-top terrarium. For fans of lush, moisture-loving foliage, choose a closed-top terrarium that helps keep humidity in.

Dragonfly Succulent Wall Planter DIY Kit
$159

Succulent wall art and kokedama kits are also great choices for crafty plant lovers who are short on space. Not familiar with kokedama? It’s a Japanese term that means “moss ball.” The plant’s roots and soil are wrapped in moss, then secured with string or fishing line, creating a living sculptural piece that grows right along with the plant. A wide variety of plants can thrive in a kokedama, and they can be displayed on a tray or hung from the ceiling.
