My Kids Hate Going to Bed, but They Love Sleeping on This Spring Mattress (and So Do I!)

Estate sales, yard sales, and antique shops were regular weekend destinations for my brother and me as kids. My parents, always on the hunt for period-appropriate decor for our Staten Island 19th-century house, made sure of it. Since then, I’ve had a love for home design and…read more

Getting my 3- and 6-year-old sons to sleep at night can be a challenge. There are a million requests for water, stories, and more. But since my husband put together their TUFFING bunk bed with VESTERÖY pocket spring mattresses (both from IKEA), the process has become a little easier — now they actually want to get into bed!

The twin VESTERÖY mattresses are the ideal mix of soft and firm. They’re priced at just $249, which also makes them a budget-friendly option. Looking for more great deals? Then check out the IKEA Winter Sale, where you can save up to 50% on select items, and IKEA Family Members can receive extra discounts.

What Is the VESTERÖY Pocket Spring Mattress?

The VESTERÖY is a medium-firm mattress with individually wrapped pocket springs that go all the way to the edges. It even features firmer coils on the side for extra support. This setup means the springs move on their own, so you won’t wake up your partner when you toss and turn — plus, it helps with airflow. For a cozy finish, it has a foam top layer and a soft, quilted cover with some extra cushion. The VESTERÖY is available in a twin, full, queen, or king, and comes with a 10-year limited warranty.

Why I Love the VESTERÖY Pocket Spring Mattress

Given that my sons are only 3 and 6 years old, I knew the twin mattress for their new bunk bed would likely have a short lifespan. Therefore, I was looking for a comfortable yet budget-friendly option. Having slept on an IKEA mattress (the now-discontinued SULTAN HALLEN) for the last decade, my husband and I knew that the retailer would check all the boxes.

We chose the VESTERÖY Pocket Spring Mattress, and purchased two in-store. They came conveniently roll-packed (measuring 43.75 inches and weighing 41 pounds each), which was ideal for fitting them into our small car. After bringing them home and unpacking, the mattresses were ready for the slatted bunk bed within an hour.

It was my 6-year-old’s first night in the bunk bed, and I ended up sleeping on the top bunk with him (I think I was more nervous than he was!). I was genuinely surprised by how comfortable the VESTERÖY mattress was, and I slept wonderfully. Since then, I’ve often found excuses to sneak into their room for a nap.

For me, the mattress strikes a great balance between soft and firm — but not too firm — which makes it an excellent choice for a child’s bed or a guest room. I would also recommend pairing it with a waterproof mattress cover (a $15 lifesaver for the inevitable spills and messes that come with little kids). Now, if you’ll excuse me, I might try to squeeze in a quick power nap before the kids come home from school.
