When Charlotte Hohorst was personalizing her mostly white Los Angeles apartment, she would do design gut checks with her friends. “Should I just paint this whole room navy blue?” she remembers asking them. Their response? “Hell yeah.”

Charlotte says she “took a sort of fearless approach to color” in the apartment. Some rooms are totally color clashing, like the kitchen and office, and “some rooms are drenched, like my living room,” she adds.

The living room makeover goes all-in on blue.

She painted the living room walls a rich navy hue (Behr’s Starless Night), and there’s actually a clever renter-friendly hack on the walls if you look closely. Charlotte added vintage alabaster sconces to the walls, but “the TaskRabbit [tasker] I used refused to do the wires down the back knowing I was renting (smart guy!),” Charlotte recalls. “He suggested I cover the wire with painter’s tape and then paint it the same color as the wall.” Ingenious!

Charlotte selected navy curtains and a navy sofa to match her paint. “I wanted the deepest sofa possible because I like to sit with my legs curled up,” she says. (Hers is from Sofa U Love.)

Personal touches really make the living room feel like home.

Speaking of seating, there are also two gold velvet chairs in the living room. “They belonged to my great-grandparents, and my dad remembers not being allowed to sit on them as a kid,” Charlotte says. “I didn’t know them, but I love thinking about them cherishing their furniture the same way that I do.”

Her pillows have the same Laura Ashley fabric that she grew up with in her childhood bedroom, the rug is from Bath & Body Works (it’s on sale for $125!), and the candelabras on the wall are vintage. The droopy candles within them were a happy accident.

“I went away for the month of August last summer and I came home to them totally drooped over — I was obsessed,” Charlotte says. “They remind me of when tulips start to grow after they’re cut.” (Perhaps one thing to look forward to in the summer heat?)
