Cozy bedroom with a white bed, wooden nightstand, dresser, framed photo, and hats on the wall.

As a recent New York transplant, I’m not used to changing my bedding according to the seasons. I moved from Miami, where it’s basically summer year-round, so I’ve always preferred cooling sheets and duvets. Now that I’m faced with my first real winter in a drafty apartment, however, I needed something a lot cozier.

Enter: this luxurious Down Duvet by Ostermoor, the Manhattan-based mattress and bedding company that’s been around since 1853. After sleeping on the duvet for over two months, I can honestly say I won’t be sleeping without it this winter (and possibly forever). Read on for my honest thoughts.

Quick Overview

The Down Duvet at a Glance

  • It’s made of 100% cotton with 80% white duck down and 20% white duck feather blend fill.
  • The cotton cover offers exceptional breathability and softness.
  • Features sewn-in corner loops for easy fastening to duvet covers.
  • The edges feature double-stitched piping to keep its shape and loftiness.
  • It’s available in Full/Queen and King/Cal King sizes

Design Features That Stand Out

The first thing I noticed about the Down Duvet was how incredibly fluffy it is. When I learned that Ostermoor makes the bedding in the trendy Six Bells Countryside Inn in upstate New York, it all made sense to me, because the duvet feels luxe and lofty, like the comfiest hotel bed. Its baffle box construction adds to the effect, and keeps the fill from migrating for extra fluff factor.

What’s more, the cotton cover is soft and smooth to the touch. I didn’t feel any feathers poking through, which can happen with some down comforters.

Ostermoor’s Down Duvet is made in accordance with the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), which means they abide by a strict welfare standard for geese and ducks. They’re also OEKO-TEX® certified which means they’re free of harmful synthetics or dyes.

How It Performed

Unlike my old comforter that left me desperate for more coverage and coziness, the Down Duvet feels like a warm hug, which is everything I want now that the weather’s getting cooler. My husband runs hot while he sleeps, so we usually follow the Scandinavian sleep method (a partnered sleep practice that involves each person using their own duvet!). But now that it’s been getting colder he’s been reaching for the Down Duvet more often, which is a testament to how deliciously toasty it is. I also appreciate that I don’t need to sleep in top-to-bottom fleece pajamas to account for extra warmth, because the duvet offers all the coziness I need.

What’s also surprising about the Down Duvet is that it gives me that pillowy loftiness and weight I crave for all-night comfort, without feeling totally overwhelming. It actually feels pretty lightweight despite how thick and warm it is — like wrapping myself in a cozy cloud.

Aesthetically, it looks like most duvet inserts: white with a baffle box construction. While it would look perfectly fine on its own, I use it as an insert for my Piglet In Bed duvet cover and the fit couldn’t be better. The Down Duvet’s fluffy texture fills the cover beautifully without sagging. I truly couldn’t be happier with it.

After wrapping myself up in its plush softness for nearly two months, I can say I haven’t noticed any feathers poking through the cotton shell. The filling hasn’t migrated either, and to my surprise I haven’t had to fluff it up since I got it.

Should You Buy the Ostermoor Down Duvet?

If you’re a cold sleeper, you won’t regret investing in Ostermoor’s Down Duvet for year-round coziness. And if you run warm through the night, you’ll love curling up in its cozy fluffiness during the winter months. I can’t speak on how it’ll feel once the weather warms up again, but I know I’ve found my go-to fall and winter bed covering in this duvet. It makes my bedroom look and feel way more luxurious and inviting!

Just be warned, it does make it harder to get out of bed in the morning! It’s that snuggly.
