When you think about it, a lot of our furniture comes from plants. Anything wooden was once a tree, obviously, but there are plenty of other offerings from Mother Nature. One of those plant powerhouses? Rattan. You may only know it as the type of furniture common in farmhouse or boho styles that looks like it’s made from woven sticks or rope, but the word rattan originally refers to a type of climbing palm plant that grows in tropical areas. And it’s become a favorite of homeowners and stagers everywhere for its instant ability to make every space look boho-chic.

Though not every piece of rattan furniture is made from plants these days (some are synthetic rattan, which tends to last longer and is easier to clean), the rattan trend shows no sign of slowing down. To help sort through the jungle of options out there, I spoke to home stager Tiffany Fasone of Voila Design Home, which operates in Philadelphia, New York City, and the Hamptons to get her list of rattan faves.

Woven Wicker Floor Vase, Small
$159

Vases aren’t just for flowers! As Fasone points out, they’re also “great to have on hand for filling dead or awkward spaces.” These tall, sculptural vases from West Elm, which come in three different sizes, are made from rattan handwoven into funky, curvy shapes. Fasone says they “add an organic element to every room” and can stand alone as decor even if you don’t put anything in them.

Nest Rattan Nightstand Bed, Queen
$2,198

If you really want to make a splash with the boho-farmhouse look, this sweeping, dramatic rattan bed can instantly transform your room. Instead of the typical headboard, a paneled rattan structure that resembles an old-school changing screen surrounds the bed’s top half. “The rattan gives a traditional style and relaxed feel,” Fasone adds, and for an extra touch of creative practicality, there are multitier nightstands built into the interior sides.

Siljoy Rattan Lamp Shade Rustic Chandelier
$108$45

Lamps are usually a wonderful way to add some character to a room, especially if you’re trying to move away from builder-grade lighting, but not if you don’t have much floor or table space. Sometimes it’s best to revamp what’s already there, and this rustic woven rattan fixture from The Home Depot will transform your drab overhead light into a sunny, charming statement piece. “This light fixture gives off great shadows and is a great focal point for a small room or low ceilings,” Fasone notes.

Threshold Short Decorative Basket
$40

This basket is very versatile and affordable,” Fasone says, and she really means it — both sizes are under $50. “It can be used as a shoe basket in an entryway, a laundry basket, or even as an indoor planter cover,” and those are just a few ideas. While you make up your mind, feel free to display them empty, since the rattan design looks plenty good on its own.

Bay Isle Home Accent Cabinet
$600$260

It’s always nice to have extra storage in your home, and it’s even better if it looks good. This charmingly tall wooden cabinet from Wayfair combines farmhouse and coastal styles and has plenty of space, including two drawers and two large cabinets with rattan-paneled doors in either white or light brown. “This is a great storage cabinet and can be multipurpose too,” Fasone explains, adding that it can serve “as a makeshift bar storage unit or even as a wardrobe in a bedroom.”
